I was blown away - again!

While good, that album just didn't have the variety of songs that I like in my albums.

Being a former guitarist, the most anticipated album of this year for me has been Michael Sweet's "I'm Not Your Suicide". I admit I may be a bit impartial as I have been a fan of his since I heard Stryper's first album back in 1984, but I have always looked forward to his solo projects as it brings out a whole different side to his style of music.

This album has everything from hard rocking riffs, to slower, ballad-like tunes, and everything in between. When I started playing the album for the first time, it opened with "Taking On The World" - featuring Tony Harnell. I mean really, how can you not get into an album that starts off with air raid sirens? Taking On The World has a heavy, grooving riff, and it just sucks you right into wanting more.

This album is full of "lift you up - feel good" tunes, and Mike does not disappoint. From the heavy rockers like "Taking On The World", "Anybody Else", (Which gave me a flashback of Twisted Sisters early days on the opening riff), and "Unsuspecting" which is chock full of Michael Sweet signature screams as well as some killer, uplifting guitar solo's, to the slower, more relaxed feel of song's like "The Cause", "How To Live" and " Coming Home", This album will not disappoint.

The title track, "I'm Not Your Suicide", has got to be arguably the best anti-bullying song that has ever been written. Full of uplifting lyrics, a rocking guitar vibe and Mike's signature screams, this song will surely make the hair on your arms stand to attention.

And don't forget, there is not one, but TWO versions of Neil Young's "Heart Of Gold".

I wanted to take a moment to encourage you to do something. Last week, like many of you I received my copy of both the book “Honestly” and the album “I’m not your suicide”. I already knew many of the stories in the book as my friend Michael has told me some of them over the years. But it was really great to really delve a little deeper into his experiences and get a more complete picture that talks over coffee don’t get into. It took me just a few nights to read the entire book. Let me tell you what you will get with this book. You will hear the stories of Michael’s early life, the beginnings of the band, the struggles, the missteps, the highs, the lows, the full story of the break up, the feelings he had during Kyle’s illness and her passing, the reunion of the band, his new chance at love with Lisa and where things stand spiritually with him throughout his life and now. You will come away feeling several emotions including happiness, deep sadness, anger, frustration and joy. You will also come away encouraged in your soul. You will also see that though Michael Sweet may be a famous rock star and a person called to share the gospel with the world by being on stage and in music, he is a guy who struggles with the same things you and I do. His story contains many of the same stories in my life. I saw how we both came out on the other side of those problems and are both are on the same path of success in those areas today.
After I finished the book, I put in the CD. I was blown away by this effort! Michael has and always be my favorite singer and musician. This time he took me on a journey musically that I didn’t expect. The album starts out some great Metal songs that are so familiar to those of us who have and remain fans of Stryper.

I knew this CD would be good but not this good.
It rocks and had some strong ballads with notes that only Michael can reach. Classic stryper undertones. Top notch remake of Heart of Gold. Great collaborations thought the tracks. Title track had a strong anointing on it for life. This video can bring healing to many people. Great work Michael. Been a fan since the beginning.

Michael's new release is his best solo work to date. It is worth the complete download.

If you are looking for the Stryper sound it is here on a few tunes that are really good rockers. The Stryper style songs are "Taking On The World Tonight", "All That's Left (For Me To Prove"), "Anybody Else", and "Unsuspecting". The rest of the release has some elements of his previous recordings such as "Truth", and "Real". He also heads down a couple of new roads with "Coming Home" and "Heart of Gold" which have an enjoyable country bent but is unmistakably Michael Sweet. Adding Dave Mustain's daughter is a real nice touch. She blends really well with the song and gives "Heart of Gold" extra depth. Some of my favorite tracks are "Miles Away" which mixes acoustic and electric guitars as well as "The Cause". There is also some really good guitar soloing which is a lost art in most modern music.

I find the song "Show Me How to Live" very moving and passionate and is a testimony of loving again and seems to speak to Michael's wife Lisa. I had the privilege to meet Michael's wife Lisa and talk with her for a bit when Stryper played at Mohegan Sun in CT. She is very kind and beautiful woman from the inside out. Her love for her husband and his music was evident and inspiring.

I've been a fan for 30 years which is an amazing thing to say and am very appreciative for the encouragement that Michael has been to me through the formative years as a youth to stand strong and proud in my faith. I still enjoy his music and now my children also love Stryper and Michael Sweet.

On the technical side: The production is good and it is amazing how much millage Michael gets for his dollars. Other bands spend two to three times as much and don't get as a good of production.

It shows his considerable talents as a songwriter/singer/guitarist/producer.

It also shows other artists how to update your sound & mix it with your classic style.
