'Cause they are fun to watch!,

When I originally saw this movie, I thought it would be a spoof movie - a parody of Bigfoot films in the "Not Another ..." genre. I was half right. Not exactly compelling, it does showcase two "little" men who are self-identified as poor, and their shared obsession - nay ... DREAM ... to find Bigfoot and get their prayers answered. The movie starts out on a dark note, which is again woven into the story to show one of the low-points of half of our dashing duo's 15 minutes of fame being used to <gasp> accuse him of perpetrating a hoax. Somehow, the quivering eyes reveal more about the character of the man, than the truth. Time to develop a story? Or the victim of poor preparation from a radio co-host, creating a glaring inaccuracy which the host noted and showed him to be a liar. Either way, the radio show host did the right thing. "Oh what a tangled web we weave ..." I loved when the radio-show crew showed up and they went out 'Bigfootin'" together. Sadly, our hero got blown off for being a "dreamer." Tough crowd out there; even tougher when the light burns dimly. Which begs the analogy of being 'chewed up and spit out,' even if it will seem a bit one-sided. In this documentary, I remain unconvinced in their sincerity. Not in their belief that Bigfoot is out there - but in them actually thinking that what they do is research. On that note, I found the video entertaining, and worth the time to watch two people cope with a cold, harsh - and hairy, world out there.

A friendship story, with realistic people.,

I had no idea what to expect from this film. The title throws you off, but as soon as you start watching, you start to figure out what it really means. While the documentary backdrop may be a poor town where Bigfoot hunting is a means to an end... for Wayne and Dallas, it's what brought them together, and made them best friends. It's hard to not get a lump in your throat while watching, as the rocky relationship plays out, but everything is so tastefully done that you have to commend the filmmaker, Jay Delaney. I rarely see documentaries worthy of high rating, but the realistic people portrayed here are much more interesting for me to watch than some person so OUT of the ordinary a doc is made about them.

I had the opportunity to see a screening of this film earlier this year. As the title suggests, this documentary is far from ordinary. Two "researchers" search for Bigfoot and the American Dream. The film is less about Bigfoot and more about the drive of two individuals who have faced a lifetime of adversity. It is a sometimes dark, but ultimately humorous and hopeful portrayal of two people you are not likely to forget. This is exceptional work for a first-time filmmaker. It is a small film, but it doesn't feel limited. Even the original music is outstanding. I'm looking forward to getting the DVD to see more great moments that didn't make it into the final cut. Highly recommended.

I felt that this doc captured the plight of the Appalachian man perfectly. I thought that the men showed a real love for Bigfoot, and are dead set on proving its existence. It is not your typical Bigfoot movie. Don't expect your mind to be changed about the existence of Bigfoot by this movie, perhaps though your mind will be changed about the plight of the poor. Don't listen to me though just go watch it.

I loved this movie! Who cannot like these fellows? I was wonderfully surprised with this film, it is so real. I wish them both the greatest success, with their new television reality show and their pursuit of BigFoot :)

Touching Buddy Film,

If you're looking for a film about Bigfoot, you're in the wrong place. Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie truly lives up to its name. This film presents these two colorful characters, amateur Bigfoot researchers Dallas and Wayne, in an incredibly humanizing, tender way, chronicling their friendship and attempts to find success and acclaim in the Bigfoot community. The film begins lightly and you may find yourself laughing at Dallas and Wayne and their blind devotion to their pursuit, but as it progresses, you'll find yourself emotionally engrossed in their story and their lives. If you're not affected by them by the end, you don't have a soul. Ultimately, Dallas and Wayne are just like most Americans - they're struggling to make a name for themselves and to leave their mark on the world. In small town Appalachian Ohio, these uneducated, poverty-stricken men have decided that their best shot is finding Bigfoot. Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie shows a side of America I rarely see in cinema. It's a powerful and enlightening film about friendship, the misunderstood, and the American dream.

This review is from: Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie (DVD)
Sad story of two buddies Dallas Gilbert and Wayne Burton who really believe in big foot and all they do to prove to the world that big foot is real. The kid in me kept hoping they would find some solid proof of some sort to prove them right but as with so many unsolved monster tails there is not one shred of solid proof and these old boys just get the ridicule and disrespect you would expect from the real world. Dallas Gilbert and Wayne Burton would be fun to chat with and to go on one of there hunts with if I could keep a straight face and not giggle at the whole idea. Not a big foot movie, just a look at two men who choose to spend there lives chasing Bigfoot and is this any worse then setting around watching football or typing up movie reviews ?

Fascinating look at two Bigfooters down on their luck.,
This review is from: Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie (DVD)
This short film (only 62 minutes long) is the story of not so much Bigfoot, but of two researchers, Dallas Gilbert and Wayne Burton of Portsmouth, Ohio, and their efforts to prove to the world that Bigfoot does exist through the means of photography. Dallas shows his collection of over 150 photographs that he has taken himself which hang on his wall in his den. We meet his wife Chris and their dogs, as well as Ron Lewis, a researcher from northern Ohio, who accompanies Dallas to Tennessee for a conference held by Mary Green. We next see Wayne in the Buckeye State continuing to research in Dallas' stead (Dallas receives two awards from Green's group, one for his achievements in research and the other for his late friend retired Sheriff Fred Bradshaw). The two lament their lack of successful prodding of the scientific community to view their evidence and also the fact that their homes are basically falling apart and need maintenance. Then they receive a visit from a certain California group and researcher (hint: HONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK OKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK) who stays about five days in the area and researches with the pair the first night but then decides to go it on their own after that. All in all, this is a really good documentary about two guys who are pursuing their passion despite the ridicule they have received from others. I give this film 4 out of 5 stars.

This movie was very cool, and humorous, and touching. Dallas and Wayne are humble, passionate people...I loved how this movie reflected their raw emotions. It's obvious they care deeply about their quests, their family and one another. No matter what corner of life you're from...this movie depicts the hardship of their lives, and what it takes to find the "something" in life that makes you happy, and gets you to strive onward.Definitely not typical....I didn't know what to expect, glad I watched it.... and I would watch it again too.

Fantastic study of the power of faith and friendship!,
This review is from: Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie (DVD)
It is the rare bigfoot movie that calls into question your connection and responsibility to your fellow man, but then, well, this is Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie. From the first time I saw this fascinating documentary from filmmaker Jay Delaney, it touched the core of my being in a profound and existential sense. My reaction to it was not at all dissimilar to my reaction after watching Werner Herzog's Grizzly Man. Perhaps there's something about watching men obsessed that provokes you to want to save them, while wishing you could share their conviction at the very same time.NYTBM follows a pair of bigfoot "researchers," from a former steel town in Ohio, as their friendship and reputations are tested by the arrival of a top-shelf professional bigfoot hunter. What unfolds is a story so well-plotted that it's hard to believe at times you're watching a documentary, but the story in NYTBM is merely the delivery device for the documentary's real gift: a kind of potent cinematic essay on the enigmatic powers of faith. Delaney's subjects are nothing if not entirely powerless over their lives, over their rundown homes and fallen township, over their own emotions. These are men of no means, with no ability to stand up to their circumstance. Just one thing keeps them going, keeps them waking up each and every day, facing the bleakness of the world around them: their faith. Faith in bigfoot, faith in their friendship, faith that there's got to be more to this implacable life than meets the eye. Their stubbornness in the face of reason is the part that really challenges you. I highly recommend Jay Delaney's Not Your Typical Bigfoot Movie. It's an extremely touching, challenging, and even comedic look at two very real Americans. Buy it on DVD today! |
