Book Description

November 2005 Notes on (William B. Eerdmans Publishing)
The "Notes on ..." series by distinguished music critic Conrad Wilson illuminates the music of some of history's greatest composers in relation to their private lives. In each volume Wilson selects twenty crucial works of a given composer, discusses these masterpieces with insight and verve, and tells why these particular works are fundamental to understanding the composer.

Wilson's vast musical expertise and succinct, polished prose style permeate these pages. Meant for any general reader interested in music, these guidebooks are ideal for dipping into as well as reading straight through.

For many music lovers, Bach is a perpetually sober and serious composer, frowning out of pictures on book and CD covers. Wilson reminds listeners that one who only heard Bach's music might imagine him as vivacious, even romantic, and shows why Bach continues to intrigue and influence the music scene.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'Conrad Wilson's blend of erudition, wit and scrupulous accuracy, laced with racey anecdotal evidence, makes his writing approachable, whichever level of engagement the reader has with 'classical' music. These volumes will be invaluable.' JOHN WALLACE, PRINCIPAL, THE ROYAL SCOTTISH ACADEMY OF MUSIC AND DRAMA'I hugely admire Conrad Wilson's writing. This is an approachable and authoratitive insight into the music and lives of the great composers.' SIR BRIAN MCMASTER, DIRECTOR AND CHIEF EXECTUIVE, EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

This review is from: Notes on Bach: 20 Crucial Works (Notes on (William B. Eerdmans Publishing)) (Paperback)
Conrad Wilson has an excellent series, looking at twenty crucial works of various composers. Why twenty? It's enough to give credit to their work, but a small enough number it forces Wilson to make decisions on which books to include.

Notes on Bach: 20 Crucial Works is a good book at helping you get to know Bach, his times, and his music.
