5.0 out of 5 stars Berryman does it again!
You couldn't hope to get more useful information from a 460 page book than you do from this thin 46 page book. I learned 90% of what I was taught in 5 separate design classes within this single tiny book. It's a must-have for all beginning, and even expert, designers!

3.0 out of 5 stars Little disappointed
After taking the money, it still took the seller 5 days to ship out my item, when they claimed a certain day to be shipped. When the item was received the corners of the book were all bent. The upside to this is that it was the right book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you want to know about design in 45 pages or less, January 5, 1999
By A Customer
I picked this book up in 1979 as an aspiring advertising copywriter who wanted to know more about graphic design. Now, after 20 years in the advertising business, as both a creative director and agency owner, I still refer novice ad writers and art directors to this wonderful overview. I simply can't believe how much easy-to-understand info is condensed into so few pages. My bravos and acknowledgements to Berryman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Graphic Design 101, July 16, 2001

This review is from: Notes on Graphic Design and Visual Communication (Paperback)
Notes on Graphic Design and Visual Communication is the most essential graphic design book written. Despite being very thin in quantity of pages, this book holds an enormous amount of graphic knowledge. I am currently studying Industrial Design and was refered to this book by a professor to help me with my graphic design knowledge. It opened the world of graphics up to me in an easy to read, fun package. The only complaint I`ve heard of this book is the font used for text. This book has a hand written font which can sometimes be hard to read. I have had no problems with the font however.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome reference! Still have my copy from 1987!, January 16, 2006
I got this book during my junior year in high school for an intro to graphic design class...and still refer to it every so often. I would recommend it for any graphic designer, especially students, as it has a wealth of knowledge-from basic design principles to the grid, typogrpahy, etc.- contained in it's small amount of pages.
A must have for any graphic designer!

5.0 out of 5 stars The title of this book is WRONG!!, June 29, 1998
By A Customer
I just wanted to warn people who plan on purchasing this book that the official title of this book is "Notes on Graphic Desing and Visual COMMUNICATION" instead of what is advertised. It is basically the same book as the one published in 1983, but I didn't know that and ordered it thinking it was new material.

This book consists of the compiled notes from Gregg Berryman's lectures to his beginning design students and does a good job of introducing the basics. It covers the history of graphic design, logo design, type, and layout in a very succinct manner. Don't be fooled by it's thinness...it's pretty dense.

Instructors: Be warned--Berryman is a strong advocate of the grid!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BIBLE, December 27, 2010
By
alan joseph (lancaster, ca USA) - See all my reviews
I was required to purchase this book for my intro to design class in college. It was the only book I kept and refused to sell back to the book store. Here I am four years later working inhouse design. When I feel burned out I open this book about once a year and it's very refreshing to look at the ultra classic examples of logos/symbols/marks. To read about the fundamentals and foundation of design once again- to go back to the basics. I refer to it as my "design bible". Very timeless as this was originally released in the 80's I believe- so some sections like the print section is very dated but everything else is still true to this day. Thank you Mr. Gregg Berryman if you are out there!

4.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME handbook for graphic designers, February 6, 2008
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The only reason I gave this a four out of five stars is because the author wrote in all caps which is incredibly hard to read page after page. It also goes against the graphic design rule of not writing in all caps unless it's a short headline. Other than that, this book is great for all levels of designers. For beginners it tells all the principles and walks through how to go about projects. For intermediate and advanced it's good to have by your computer to refresh yourself every now and then on the principles of good design. Great book... would recommend to anyone in the design field.
