Morse Never Misses,

This review is from: Notes Over Yonder (Hardcover)
I've been following the work of Scott Morse for years. In my mind, he... more the point, his work... embodies the free spirit of art. Morse tackles heavy subject matter with the same ease he rips through action and slow burns through comedy. On a few occasions, namely "THE ANCIENT BOOK OF" series and much of SOUTHPAW, he's spun yarns with little to no words at all. This is what cartoonists would refer to as "pure storytelling". And NOTES OVER YONDER is the finest example of Morse in pure storytelling mode. Still, color sensibility is the place this book shines the brighter. The richness of hues in such a seemingly limited (red, blue and white through the vast majority of the work) scheme is breathtaking. But the real star of the book (for me) is the fact Morse self-published this work through his own RED WINDOW. If you aren't familiar with his work, I suggest starting with every book he's published through RED WINDOW. The packaging alone of that shortlist of books is an illustrators dream. "... listen close..." |
