In the beginning of this story your heart will break for a beautiful young dog that was rescued by Brian. When she came to Brian he discovered how this poor animal had been mistreated both physically and emotionally. Then slowly Brian gains her trust as Roo slowly learns that she can trust her new human. The bond that forms is obvious. Tears of sadness in the beginning but with everyday, and with every accomplishment Roo makes those sad tears turn to happiness as the relationship between a man and his dog develops. This is a must read for all animal lovers, you won't regret it.

"Notes from a Dog Rescue in Progress" is a story of heartbreak and joy, the story of Roo the Golden Retriever who comes from a place of fearing everything and grows into a beautiful girl still a little fearful, but also happy and learning to trust again. You will cry as you read, but you will also be left full of hope, and yes, love, for beautiful Roo as she continues on her journey. Be sure to watch the videos (there are links to them in the text) for a heartwarming view of this little girl and the progress she has made. This isn't a long story -- it's just the beginning, really, and I look forward to following Roo and her adventures for a long time to come.

By the way, if you check you will see that this is only my second book review. You may be a little skeptical because of the 5 star review, so I will tell you that I do not know the author and I did purchase the book and it was well worth the cost.

The story of Brian and Roo brings tears to my eyes with every page. Tears of anger at the inhumanity of those who would abuse and terrify a sweet, gentle, innocent puppy. Tears of sadness for a scared puppy in such horrific pain, both physical and emotional. Tears of joy for the love she has found with Brian and the bravery she shows every day, confronting the demons around every corner and each bright light. This is a story of hope, redemption and love, as two kindred souls learn to trust each other. I have read these stories several times now, and they never get old. I so look forward to continuing the journey with Roo and Brian as the travel the country in search of new adventures. This book is a must-read for anyone who has ever loved a dog.

I totally agree with the other reviewers that this is a touching, heartwarming story. What made this book special for me, is that the author describes the first difficult days in minute details. It's almost a manual on how to act when bringing a flea ridden, extremely fearful and neglected dog home. What I learned e.g. is that Frontline (and maybe other flea meds too) makes fleas hyperactive before they die. So 18 hours after applying it, poor Roo had fleas crawling in and out of her eyes and all over her snout and face. After struggling a bit, she let Brian remove them.
Another problem was that Roo was very afraid of noises. Most dog training manuals would advise to ignore her behaviour, stating that if you show affection this will confirm to the dog that there's a reason to be afraid. Brian says that holding her and cooing at her seemed to help. And he describes how he slowly got her over her fear.
Of course there were more problems to solve, but I won't tell all the solutions. Just buy the book if you have a fearful dog and try Brian's methods. Or buy it just because you like a good story about a rescue dog and a warm hearted human.

I have been following this story for some time. This is a beautifully written story about the rescue and rehabilitation of one of the most emotionally damaged puppies I have ever heard of. You will cry and you will laugh at the trials of this wonderful dog and the incredible man who rescued her. Thank you Brian for making this story available to everyone.

Roo shows us that anything can be overcome. Her ongoing story is humbling and heart warming. I cried for her past and cheered as she made progress. Her story is our story, as humans. It shows the evil she endured. It highlights the good that is possible as Brian nurses her physically and mentally back to health.

I have been following Brian and Roo's story from the very beginning. Just read the first paragraph and you'll be pulled in just as I was and you won't be able to stop! It's a wonderful story about a strong and resilient puppy who is recovering from a life of abuse. Thanks to Brian, we get to witness her blossom into the dog she was meant to be!

Aside from the impossible-not-to-love canine heroine, this little title portrays the challenges and rewards that often accompany canine rescue with accuracy and honesty. The author's gradual transformation from a compassionate but detached helper, to a hopelessly in-love life companion is both true-to-life and inspiring. As a longtime prisoner of this irresistible breed, I commend him for taking the time to share both his and Roo's beautiful experience together. The author also maintains an excellent website.
