Book Description

July 1, 2005
Flamingo, a young writer in Jamaica, finds herself enmeshed in the world of her fictional characters in this inspiring and poetic novel about hope and the ravages of recent Jamaican economic and social upheavals. When poverty, emigration, and political turmoil in the fictional world oblige Flamingo's characters to disperse, the one-eyed protagonist Alva solicits Flamingo's help to bring them back together. The innovative novel is organized as a writers' notebook and sprinkled with recipes, herbal remedies, dream interpretations, and various other interjections evoking the culture and traditions of Jamaica.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Alva's tears fill the lamp and I write in the light of its dancing flame.", February 11, 2006
This review is from: Notes from a Writer's Book of Cures and Spells (Paperback)
There's an addictive, evocative, occasionally bizarre story at its center, but make no mistake - Notes From a Writer's Book... is a story about writing. The images at its cetner are of a person being forced into another's skin, swapping shoes, being drawn to the same bouganvillia or poui tree as a character to find its specific yellow blossoms. It speaks to the overwhelming and unique experience of writing itself, and in a voice that reads like an even more mystical Toni Morrison, that experience has rarely seemed so moving, or so vital. This is an incredibly fast read, and an incredibly rewarding one.
