Book Description

July 5, 1999
What is our true nature? And how do we access it? How do we glimpse it? A facial mirror will do for our face, but what about the mind itself?

Nothing is a mind-mirror which holds up a glass to the mind so that we can begin to observe it. And in that looking, an opening can occur in which life is seen as inherently gracious and rewarding.

In Nothing, investigative writer Jim Sloman takes us on a journey through the mind and the context in which it resides. In the process, he clearly and precisely demystifies the essence of the mind so that our true nature can be revealed. He skillfully and playfully uses stories, quotes and fables from many different paths and traditions to assist in uncovering our inherently bright, warm and loving nature.

In reading Nothing the eye is pleased as well as the soul through simple, beautiful and elegant illustrations by the noted artist Tonia Weeks. Nothing was awarded the Design Award of the Printers of the Carolinas.

About the Author

James M. Sloman is an investigative writer whose subject is the human condition. He has sought understanding from a wide range of great teachers past and present, famous and obscure, and traditions ranging from India to the kitchen table.

Originally trained in philosophy at Princeton and with an MFA in film from Columbia, he draws from experience in an eclectic career which has included being a copywriter, assistant editor and computer programmer in New York, a novelist in rural Massachusetts, a trader in Chicago and a market theorist in San Diego.

In addition to presenting occasional courses on theories of financial markets, Sloman has spent over two decades teaching seminars and workshops on spirituality, consciousness in everyday life, diet and nutrition, finding our true calling in life, and accessing our inner guidance.

In addition to Nothing, Sloman is the author of the books Handbook for Humans, The Natural Way, Song of Existence, A Global Vision and The State of the World.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peaceful and enlightening, August 9, 2000
By

This review is from: Nothing, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
Nothing is a peaceful look at one's mind and the positions, issues, and subconcious responses we all fall prey to every day. Reading it is like flowing along a cyclic path as the author takes you on a journey through the mind. The author has a unique perspective that is both intriguing and encouraging. For anyone looking to achieve greater insight into oneself, greater emotional maturity, Nothing is a wonderful book to help in building a substantial foundation for future growth.

One doesn't have to "agree" with everything within Nothing to leave the experience of reading it with numerous jewels -- jewels that help provide that critical insight into oneself; jewels that become more and more apparent as one uses the lessons within to become more self-aware, more alive, more loving. In a way, Nothing is a significant part of everything.

Thanks Mr. Sloman for your wonderful contribution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing and Everything, July 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Nothing, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
I read this book almost twenty years ago and throughout that time many of its phrases and similies have remained with me. It is a book written with an elegant simplicity and flow that deals some of the deepest human concerns. With a sure footed grace James Sloman consistently avoids over-simplification while at the same time addressing the reader in a direct, clear, and down to earth manner.

I just finished re-reading the book and enjoyed it so much that I checked on Amazon to see if it were still in print. I am glad to see that it is. This is a book that wears well. Even those well versed it its subject manner will be charmed at Mr. Sloman's eqoquent exposition. Those who are new to the viewpoints presented in the book will find a balanced, thoughtful, and always understandable presentation that presumes no special knowledge other than some experience with life. Because of this, it is the sort of book that people of all ages can enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars a book with something to offer, July 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Nothing, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
"Nothing" has something to offer. If you're looking for a very easy to follow guide to the tenants of Zen Buddhism, Mr. Sloman's book might be of interest to you. Zen Buddhism states that suffering on this earth is caused by illusion and attachments. The more detached you come from these things, the less you will suffer. Mr. Sloman repeatedly drives these tenants home, through many examples from various religious traditions. If you can at least intellectualize theses tenants, "Nothing" might seem more than a little repetitious to you. For those of you who meditate regularly already, reciting one's mantra will probably help you more than "Nothing" will.
