This review is from: Nothing But the Blues: 30 Postcards (Paperback)
I was presented this slim but interesting volume by my husband after one of his visits to the book capital of Britain Hay-on-Wye. It is an 'aperitif' for the main course which is the full volume by Lawrence Cohn (which I now have in my small library of books on the Blues). I wanted to send fellow Blues lover friends of mine some of the post cards included in this compact edition but was loathed to break up the book. Trying to get another copy was like 'Mission Impossible' -at least in the U.K.. Some of the pics are real gems which I have never seen in other books or magazines. I particularly liked the Jimmy Reed accompanied by the 'extra terrestials' - I cannot wait to read how this pic' was composed. My favourite snapshot has to be that of the late great Willie Dixon and the relaxed and easy moment at which the camera caught him. It is also interesting to see some of the post cards taken for official publicity and the poses adopted by the artists. They contrast nicely with others taken in less formal surrounds (such as state prisons etc. ) and are less contrived. The diversity of artists and composition of the photos is what is so appealing about this book for me and I now face the dilemma that having purchased a second copy will I have the temerity to do as proposed with the original and tear out cards and send off to friends. (I could E-mail them but everyone's doing that these days) Traditional correspondance is still my forte!
