The best new Bonnie Raitt disc in years,
By

I hope Grace doesn't mind the comparison, it seems unlikely she hasn't heard it before. This is a really good disc. The song "Nothing but the Water" has been my drive to work song for weeks. It's got the best killer hammond organ since the Delta 72. "Toothbrush and my Table" is a classic. The first line is "I came back home with a jewel missing out of my crown". Who hasn't had a morning like that. Other standout songs are "Left Behind", "Treat Me Right", "Sweet Hands", and "Joey". This disc also comes with a Live DVD from a preformance in a small bar. It's great to see her in action. If you Like Bonnie, Susan Tedeschi, Rory Block, Toni Price, Maria Muldaur, etc. You'll like this.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals is one of the best up-and-coming bands on the entire music scene. They have a great beat, rythym and style. Grace's voice is too good to be true! Her soulful sound feels to me like a combination of Ella Fitzgerald and Etta James. Some songs are beautiful ballads like old Sam Cooke stories, while other songs rock with speed and voracity. All and all they are one of my favorite bands and expect to see them filling larger arenas sooner than later

This album rocks. The only thing better is seeing them live. I saw them at the Independent in SF a year ago. Then I saw them headlining at the same place last week. Inagine Bonnie Raitt meets Norah Jones meets Led Zeppelin and you'll half an idea what these guys are about. And founded in Canton, NY no less.

Bonnaroo. There are some bands you see there that you know are gonna kick some (Petty, Beck). Then there are those that you have never heard of that put those artists in the shadows. This band is one of them. I was just walking by this show, and couldnt leave. I then went straight to the tower records tent and bought this album, which stands right up to par with the awesome performance. This album is straight up rock with an edge, and if you ever get the chance to see them live, you wont be dissapointed.

10 on the Richter Scale,

Toss Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones and Aretha Franklin in a blender, add a sprinkle of mountain soul and a dash of funkadelic, let rise in a cool Vermont breeze and you get Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Enjoy straight up or on the rocks. Be prepared. It's a mix of bluesy, funky, gospely, folksy, ass kicking stuff. This is a tight band with an amazing vocalist. Potter is a reminder that those who thought great music ended in the 1960's just aren't listening. When her voice finally breaks through the barren world of canned culture, she'll rock the music world. Five stars don't do it justice. This music is a 10 on the Richter scale.

I just saw the live show for the first time. Having read many stories in the local papers about their likely future success, I decided I had to see what the buzz was about. I'm sold. Simply amazing. Here is part of our local paper's coverage,
Waitsfield's Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are notorious for their independent spirit. They're being courted by oodles of major labels, yet the blues-rockers with a heap of shining-star promise continue to resist, biding their time until the right deal comes along. The band that's had high-profile gigs opening for the Dave Matthews Band, Taj Mahal and fellow Vermonter Trey Anastasio is returning home for seven shows that smack of "catch this band before they're too big to play in Vermont's tiny venues." That big-band-in-a-small-site syndrome is starting to show -- three of the seven dates are sold out, including the opener Friday at Higher Ground, the South Burlington nightclub that organized the tour. The band with a reach-for-the-sky future has spent four solid months on the road honing a sound that was already impressive before they began opening for blues giants such as Taj Mahal and Robert Cray. At times Friday, as the band kicked off its seven-date "Bringing It All Back Home" tour of Vermont, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals were a barely-controlled explosion. The opening numbers might have been other band's exhaustive finales. From the first tune, "Ticket to the Show," the Nocturnals showed they were ready not just for the big room, but for far bigger stages. The evolution of a band that just over a year ago played with relative restraint at Halvorson's Upstreet Cafe to one Friday that jumped and hollered and jammed with euphoric passion is nothing short of astounding. Potter's voice, always soulful, is filling out, growing growlier, sultrier. If once it seemed Grace Potter was channeling Norah Jones, now she's nailed Tina Turner, and there's no turning back. Do yourself a favor, buy it now. Then turn your friends on to them.

Mike S. nailed it good when he compared this album to Bonnie Raitt's oeuvre, and especially I should add the 'Nick Of Time' LP. However nice is the playing and good is the voice, I think Ms Potter & Co. remain far too much inside their comfort zone. The end result is a rather well-intended, reverential and formulaic blues-rock. In their first few LPs (The White Stripes and White Blood Cells), The White Stripes gave a good kick to the way the blues was then played. Even Joss Stone, in her first LP (Soul Sessions), had a more interesting take on ol' time soul music than what G. Potter achieved here. That said I don't have any doubt this band is a good night out whenever they're playing live.

There is a blues and gospel influence on the songs on this disc although the songs are not straight blues or gospel. You can hear this in Grace's voice and the arrangements. She reminds me somewhat of Susan Tedeschi, who is also from New England. This is a very strong effort from a young artist. I think she can be around a long time if she stays true to her roots and avoids doing work that the record companies think they can sell better.

A Great VT Band!!!,

This is a band from my home state of Vermont. It is an awesome CD. It is an awesome combination of soul, blues, folk, and rock. Grace has an awesome voice and if you ever get the chance to see them live it is a concert you will not forget. They are one of those bands that sound amazing on CD and even better live. There is a lot of energy on this CD and the lyrics are different from what you might hear from most bands consisting of people in their low 20's...they really are some profound words. Definately an EXCELLENT BUY!!!
