Good for me, good for you, October 14, 2003
Not to resort to hyperbole, but: this music was hatched in an idyll, some untouched paradise where dusk becomes dawn bypassing the long night, by an octet of cherubs, inspired by divinity, yet rooted in simplicity.Seriously though, this is one amazing record. It's an indie rock collaboration of 8 musicians, 9 if you count John McEntire on soundboard. It captures the dreamy air of the Sea & Cake without the jazzy pretention, the pastoral quality of Belle & Sebastian, and at times, subtle Stereolab inspired electropop. There's 50/50 split of instrumental tracks and tracks with breathy, gentle vocals. Track 4 is titled A Vale of Twisted Silk - a fitting description for the gossamer beauty of this music, which is like so many layers of shimmering fabric. The beauty is in the mix; this ensemble employs vocals, strings of all kinds, acoustic guitars, piano, melodica, flute, vibes, organ, and others elements can't identify, all beautifully layered and mixed with electronic drums and effects. The result is a very full, lush texture through which tributaries of breezy melody are weaved. It's good for me, and it's good for you, people. I've given this album to older hippies and younger hipsters alike, and even the most stubborn music snobs fall under its spell.
