Book Description

Revised 1/25/12
When racism tears a school apart, can love put it back together?

As the senior star quarterback of Charleston Preparatory school in South Carolina, Scott Kincaid is poised for a spectacular professional career in sports. Though he and Reyna Lewis have been best friends for six years, between leading Charleston Prep to victory week after week, and seeking the approval of his tyrannical, racist mother, he doesn’t have time to develop anything more with her. But when his once perfect, healthy body is attacked by a debilitating disease, he reevaluates what is important in life. Just when he finally realizes he’s in love with his half black, half Puerto Rican best friend Reyna, a presidential election throws their small private school into racial turmoil. Now it’s up to Scott and Reyna to unify their school and their city. But it just might cost them their newfound relationship.

2.0 out of 5 stars An unnecessary excess of tragedy drama sadness February 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wanted to like this book - and I gave it only 2 stars - for effort. It is the first of Ms. Dubois' books i have read - not sure if I would entertain another. the writing was ok, the story bordered on interesting if disjointed, the situations not altogether realistic; and then layer upon layer of heartbreaking drama which can only take a negative toll upon the reader; and then the ending Ms. Dubois gave us - UNBELIEVABLE. Come on! Ms. Dubois, do you not have at least one happy bone in your body. I was just so disappointed. The story had potential, but I just felt so weighed under by the mounting trajedy in turning each page

4.0 out of 5 stars beautifully written inspiring January 23, 2012

This book was well written with minor editing errors. Though it may seem predictable it has a few twists that I personally didn't see coming. I sat down and read it all in 3 1/2 hours but it was definitely worth it as it had the inspiring inter racial relationship in the seemingly racist town until someone talks some sense into everyone. It also has some very good plot centered around a deep maternal issue and i was pleasently surprised with the way the author went about detailing it. The characters were well developed and made you root for them, especially scottie's younger brother stu. It is definitely a tear jerked so be prepared for some sniffles, there are a few moments of "that would never really happen" but generally an overall great book that makes you want to believe wholeheartedly in true love.

5.0 out of 5 stars As Beautiful As Any Masterpiece... December 29, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was so good that I had to recommend it to my mother, who, like me, couldn't put it down until it was finished...it left you wanting more, wishing the story would never end.

What was even more refreshing was the fact that it had very little, if any, typographical errors and that is very uncommon in my line of work (copy editor).

The storyline was a very emotionally charged one till the very end...speaking of endings, the story ended so not like how I thought it would, both my mother and I were very shocked to say the least.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartstopping Story January 17, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is a modern interracial romance, with both teens pressured from the outside. He must win football games for his sports-addicted mom; she must represent the black students in a racially charged time. I've always said a good book causes a reaction that stays with you. I finished this book three days ago and I'm still thinking about it. The ending is a shocking twist--I find myself mulling over ways the characters could have changed the outcome, as if it was a news story instead of a novel. Gripping action, empathetic characters, a quick read. Enjoy it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Overly Dramatic March 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Wow...by the time I finished this book I was just pissed off. I wasn't left satisfied. There was no big sigh like I usually have at the end of a good book...just frustration. I believe Leslie is talented but she is incapable of writing stories with even a semi happy ending. There's just an unrealistic amount of tragedy and drama that it almost feels like watching a Mexican soap opera. I read romance novels to escape not be depressed. I think I may have to skip Ms. Dubois from no on because frankly she's interrupting my chi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smile November 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book. I read it in 1 day. I love a book that makes you feel like you are right there. This is the fourth book I've read by Leslie DuBois and I haven't been let down yet. This book was touching, heartfelt and warming. I don't want to spoil it for anyone else. I read a lot of books and I can say this is a book if someone asks me 2 years from know what's it about and how was it I could tell them like it I read it yesterday. (From the book..."Then I closed my eyes and felt La Cienega smile." by Leslie Dubois) Awww, Tear :-)
