5.0 out of 5 stars It's going to be a touchstone
This is the solo project (with a partner) by Simone Felice of the amazing and great Felice Brothers. I knew it would be wonderful, but I wasn't quite prepared for what it is. It's one of the most beautiful, gracious, gentle pieces of work any of us have heard in a long, long time. Simone sings like an angel and the music is sophisticated and gorgeous. Years from now, when...

3.0 out of 5 stars Just OK
I bought this CD based on the Felice Brothers CD I bought and love. Amazon did not offer any samples that I could listen to so I took a chance on buying the CD without listening to it first. I won't go as far as to say I was disapointed, but I did not feel the music was as good as some of the other reviewers made it sound. All in all, do not buy the CD just because you...

It's one of the most beautiful, gracious, gentle pieces of work any of us have heard in a long, long time. Simone sings like an angel and the music is sophisticated and gorgeous. Years from now, when we've had the treasures of much more Felice music, this will be the original touchstone for what Simone can do all on his own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even Better Than Expected!, June 9, 2010
This review is from: Nothing Gold Can Stay (Audio CD)
WHen I saw that this was a side project of Simone Felice of The Felice Brothers, I was unsure about trying it. I like The Felice Brothers, but their a;bums haven't exactly knocked me out. Pleasant, yes, but not great. Imagine my surprise when this album just blew my socks off! One of the best albums of 2009, it is an Americana masterpiece!

I heard this during WFUVs album of the week when it first came out. I was so mesmerized I sat in my car outside my house until it was finished so I wouldn't miss one note. I bought it that night and haven't stopped playing it since. The songs are spare and lush at the same time and the loose "concept" idea works really well. If you don't buy this cd you will really regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best new sound, August 24, 2009
This review is from: Nothing Gold Can Stay (Audio CD)
You have to hear it to believe it. Simone Felice, formerly of the Felice Brothers, has a sensitivity and wisdom that comes through every note. My personal favorite is "The Morning That I Get To Hell", for it's humor and it's beat, but "If You Ever Get Famous" and "Union Street" aren't far behind. I'm not a music critic, but this is music worth sharing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetic, gently told stories, October 11, 2010
This review is from: Nothing Gold Can Stay (Audio CD)
I was disappointed when I heard that Simone was no longer going to be part of the Felice Brothers, a band that I love, but after hearing this and Simone's solo album, "Live From a Lonely Place," I can't stop listening to them. Both Simone's work with his new group and his solo style are different from the work he did with his brothers. It is not rough or raucous, something that I find appealing in the stories that the Felice Brothers tell. Instead, Simone gently tells bleak stories, often with a deft touch of humor, and there is always an offer of hope. "One More American Song" tells a story that is so real, it will break your heart. This music is important and we are blessed to have Simone give it to us.

4.0 out of 5 stars Always liked Simone Felice, April 25, 2010

This album is really enjoyable and pleasant. This album includes songs from Simone Felice in a vein similar to what you heard from his Felice Brothers work. With this album we hear Simone's songwriting develop and improve from his previous work--which was already great. The band really complements each other. Most impressive with "Nothing Gold Can Stay" is that it actually sounds like an album, not a collection of unrelated songs. Each song on this album goes together well--seemingly a lost art nowadays.

I won't go as far as to say I was disapointed, but I did not feel the music was as good as some of the other reviewers made it sound. All in all, do not buy the CD just because you like the Felice Brothers, as the music is quite different. My favorite song I did pick out is Water Spider, but the others left me wanting a lot more.
