5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing too good for a Cowboy
Was a good movie and enjoyed it, but wish it had been longer. One of those movies you can watch over and over again.
(Loved the TV series and would really like to see that on DVD.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute movie, but read the book . . .
Cute is the right word for this made-for-TV movie. A cute meet involving runaway horses and a social gathering at a Vancouver country club leads to a quick marriage, and the rest of the film concerns itself with (a) whether the cowboy hero's city-bred wife has what it takes for an early-winter cattle drive, and (b) whether the ranch's investors and a greedy banker are...

Cute is the right word for this made-for-TV movie. A cute meet involving runaway horses and a social gathering at a Vancouver country club leads to a quick marriage, and the rest of the film concerns itself with (a) whether the cowboy hero's city-bred wife has what it takes for an early-winter cattle drive, and (b) whether the ranch's investors and a greedy banker are prevented from putting the ranch out of business. Needless to say, all ends well, and Ryan Gosling fans will not be dissapointed either, but any resemblance to actual cattle ranching is coincidental. I can also mention that scenic footage of this particularly breathtaking part of the world (the mountains of central British Columbia) is in short supply.

Hobson's book about himself as a young rancher in the late 1930s in BC is wonderfully written, with a chilling account of that cattle drive under severe blizzard conditions. There is a wider array of characters, including members of a local tribe of Indians, and his buddy Panhandle is given more to do than simply object to the presence of a woman on the trail. Hobson's courtship and marriage, in fact, don't happen until the end of the book. Read it; you'll enjoy it.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was cute., September 29, 2006
This review is from: Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy (DVD)
A cute movie, I bought it because I'm a big Ryan Gosling fan and it was some of his earliest work. I didn't really expect much going in. It was fairly short and there were a few times that I found it pretty amusing. And, of course, the adorableness of Ryan Gosling in a cowboy hat. All in all, I'm glad I bought it, but if I'd had to pay more than seven bucks for it, I probably wouldn't have.

I am a big fan of romance movies and this one was up there with some of my favorites! I very much enjoyed watching it (several times)and would recommend it to anyone who likes nice "feel good" romance movies! The actors were believable in their parts!

If you want to enjoy an evening of great entertaiment with your teens, spouse, or parents---this is the movie! Filled with humor, adventure and romance along with great acting and a story line that could maybe have happened sometime...I wish that they would produce more movies like this instead of the low-sleeze quality that passes for entertainment in todays market.

4.0 out of 5 stars more please, February 4, 2011

This video is based on the books by Richard P. Hobson, and is a nostalgic trip back to real frontiers and cowboys. The story is pre World War II in British Columbia, with two cowboys from the States with a dream of their own cattle ranch. Yep, there are cows and cowboys in British Columbia, with the expected moose, bear, beaver and wolves already occupying the ranch in the sky. Of course, Rich is not the usual cowboy but a socialite drop-out and maverick from the East coast, so when he manages to elope with a socialite in Vancouver, it isn't too far fetched. The story is just beginning with ranch hands enlisting in the Canadian army, forcing Rich to recruit underage boys, with one surprise, to work his infant dream. Good fun, but where's the rest of the stories? The Canadians had produced at least two seasons of Hobson's stories, so this is a revamp introduction of a very successful series. I'd like Amazon to make those Canadian seasons available, since Amazon purchased them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pan Phillips was a real character!!, June 25, 2011
By

We knew Pan Phillips and have been to the Home Ranch several times. Pan was an onery old character. There have been several books written about him by his friend Rich Hobson and this movie title is the same title as one of the books. The first one was "Grass Beyond the Mountains." These guys had to endure extreme cold temperatures in the winter - minus 50 F - and bugs that spent their life trying to eat humans a teensy nibble at a time. Once Pan's wife complained that the kitchen door on their house rubbed on the floor when opened. Pan got a chain saw and cut off 2 inches of the door. Didn't drag across the floor anymore!! He deliberately cut off too much out of pure oneriness.

This movie gives a pretty accurate taste for the adventures of Pan Phillips and friends at the Home Ranch. Hopefully there will be more movies about him.

The movie starts out as expected but then about 3 minutes into it, it lost the picture while the audio continued. Looking at the disc I couldn't detect any obvious damage. I should have returned it, but I hate mailing things back.
