AWESOME!,

This review is from: Nothing Like the Sun (Dts) (DVD Audio)
nothing like the sun has always been my favourite sting album and one of my all-time favourite CDs. this new DTS re-mix adds a whole new dimension. the original version was a very complex, multi-layered recording that required a damn good hi-fi to unravel all the various strands. in fact, the delicate piano that plays from one speaker on little wing has been my test of a good hi-fi for years. on poor systems, you hardly hear the piano at all. this recording makes use of the full 5 speakers in a surround-sound set-up and skillfully unravels the music, revealing nuances and instruments that were buried in the undercurrent. the lead vocals stay locked to the centre speaker, creating an almost-live, 3D experience that surrounds you in music. if you like sting, and you own a DTS surround-sound system, then you MUST buy this cd. don't be put off by the lacklustre DTS re-mix of ten summoner's tales - this is far superior.

DTS, The way to go!,

I am a Sting fan so, this is a review of the DTS mix. I reviewed Ten Summoner's Tales(DTS) and this one. I have to say, ...Nothing Like The Sun was mixed and sounds better. Clear, crisp sound comes from everywhere! If you have a DTS-capable system, this is "required listening". DTS has the capability of bringing out suttle things you never knew existed! I would have given this cd/dvd 5 stars except, I'm not happy that "We'll Be Together" is "not" the original version!:( "Hats Off" to David Tickle & Rod Michaels. Special note: Hiram Bullock's work on "Little Wing" sounds great!

To date, I own three DTS discs - Steely Dan - Gaucho; and Sting - Brand New Day - Nothing Like the Sun.
Since there are plenty of reviews, I will get to the bottom line. All three of these DTS discs have an excellent transfer to 5.1 DTS sound. There is the obvious separation of sound/music and back up vocals through the surround speakers and nice bass. The only drawback is the listener has to be in the central position ("Sweet Spot") to fully enjoy the 5.1 sound. So, if you have the time to relax and enjoy the music, definitely buy all three.

The quality of recording is as expected. DVD sound with DTS is certainly superior to anything I've heard thus far. There are many new sounds found in this recording that were buried on the original cut. One issue that I found however, was the mixing job. Bradford Marsalis has a beautiful solo in "English Man in New York" which for some reason does not show up on the left, center, or right speakers in full. In listening to the rest of the album I believe the mix may have been too "sting centric" thus pushing most of the music behind Stings voice. There are better moments on the album for mixing, so if you love this album it is worth checking out.

among the best for social protest,

This album has songs ranging from the beautiful ("Fragile" and "Little Wing") to the silly ("Rock Steady") to the flagrantly political ("They Dance Alone"). The songs are musically appealing. Well, for the most part anyway--a few get annoying after about the third listen. This is the sort of album Amnesty International supporters like to listen to. In addition, many of the songs have a subtle theme about mothers and mothering. "The Secret Marriage" at the end is a little gem of a song you won't want to miss.

From toe dip to full tilt,

Sting had always dipped his toe in rythems carrying a hint of world beat, even as the rocking headliner for " The Police". In his second solo effort he dives in head first, delivering a set of songs that rely heavily on world music, jazz and social conscience overtones.
It works. " The Lazarus Heart" kicks things off, with jazz riffs wrapping cryptic lyrics. " Be Still My Beating Heart" is a love song that is deeply felt. The choice of instruments, their contribution, and certainly the lyrics create an atmosphere of longing unparalleled, even for Sting's generally sensitive musings. " History Will Teach Us Nothing" is an interesting dialogue between a former teacher and the minstrel. A world beat thrums in the background as Sting chastises the past and the unthinkable atrocieties therein. " They Dance Alone" is breathtakingly touching. Agusto Pinochet had a terrifying reign, leaving women to dance the " Cueca Solo", a tribute to a fallen husband/father/son. The warring drum introduction, interspersed through the whole song, creates the right amount of foreboding. " Fragile" is so beautiful. The lyrics speak such truth, but the music sounds like rain gently pouring on us, trying to cleanse us of our baser instincts. " We'll Be Together" was the single from this disc, a worthy, catchy tune with fun pop lyrics. " Nothing Like the Sun" is one of, if not, Sting's finest solo releases.

Shame about the lack of information, but the CD when its finally realease will be a DTS version, only capable of playback on a suitably equiped home theatre reciever/amp.Hopefully it will sound as good as other Sting DTS releases.

This is a DTS surround sound encoded disc that will not play in just any cd player. You need a dts decoder to listen to it. If you have one, buy as many as you can! Nothing compares to this format. there are 2 other titles sting has released in this beutiful format. Nothing like the sun is supposed to be released 12/12/2000. Hope this helps you.
