YA--A fast-moving biography about a legend in the making. Bernotas deftly chronicles the life of this remarkable athlete from childhood through his major league career, replete with game highlights and statistics competently woven into the narrative. He leaves Abbott facing the uncertain future of baseball, as well as that of his own career, that dulled the end of the 1994 season. The author paces the narrative wisely, knowing when to cover a lot of ground--Little League, high school, college, and the Olympics--and when to spend some time building the excitement and suspense of a no-hit, no-run game. The depiction of Abbott seems real, never allowing the man to grow larger than life while giving readers insight into the personality of an athlete who never set out to be an inspiration or a role model. Jim Abbott just wants to be a ballplayer.
