Editorial Reviews

2013 release, the third album from the Canadian actor, rapper and R&B star. "Hold On, We're Going Home" coasts along on his hypnotic R&B crooning, bringing together an immediately unforgettable hook with silky and seductive soundscapes. Hearing both the delivery and magnetic production, it's clear that Drake's home is at the very top. The track also follows up the smash hit "Started From The Bottom", which peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is now nearing double-platinum status. Cash Money Records co-founder and CEO Bryan "Baby" Williams aka Birdman enthusiastically states, "an artist like Drake comes along only once in a lifetime. His talent as a lyricist, performer, and creative is unparalleled."

Its been close to two years since Drakes last album, Take Care. Nothing Was The Same follows the same path. Drizzy is out to up the ante this time around. Right out the gate, Whitney Houston's classic "I Have Nothing" gets flipped and reversed on "Tuscan Leather" as Drake drops three dope verses. The six minute intro has him detailing the fallout he had with Nicki (Not even talkin' to Nicki, communication is breakin' I dropped the ball on some personal s***, I need to embrace it) and these hot for the moment rappers (I'm tired of hearin' 'bout who you checkin' for now Just give it time, we'll see who's still around a decade from now). Then he uses that "versace" flow on "The Language", and even though Birdman tried to deny it, Drake is obviously responding to Kendrick Lamars "Control" verse. Check out some quotes from the song (F*** any n**** that's talkin' that s*** just to get a reaction), ( I got to kill off the weak s*** that's got all you n***** excited) and (Talking that s*** with your back to me, just know it always get back to me). If yall think otherwise, please let me know. But I can read between the lines.

Drake slows the tempo down on the piano laced "From Time". Jhené Aikos hook complements the beat very well. In the second verse, he admits to messing things up with his girl (Girl I felt like we had it all planned out, I guess I f***** up the vision Learnin' the true consequences of my selfish decisions). "Wu-Tang Forever", which should of been called "It's Yourz" transitions into "Own It". Supposedly a remix with the WU will be coming out soon. Certain members confirmed it. The poppish "Hold On, We're Going Home" featuring Majid Jordan is a good second single.

First off, I listen to all genres of music. But I only purchase hip hop albums if they are truly good. I remember when Drake went from being a Degrassi character to a so called rapper. Many thought he was gonna be a Nickelodeon type rapper that wouldn't be taken seriously at first. How often does an actor become a successful rapper? Well his debut album "Thank Me Later" proved many wrong. It was one of the best rap albums of 2010. His sing-rap style isn't original, but he makes it sound so new and fresh. His voice is a trademark now. Then he released the highly anticipated "Take Care", which was a step up from his debut, but kept the same vibe thanks to continued help from producer "40". That album was great, but I admit I got a little tired of some of the songs. After the very good "Take Care" it was debatable whether this was Drakes peak or just the beginning of a long career. "Nothing Was The Same" is the answer. This might be Drakes new peak. Not only is he the biggest rapper not named "Eminem" or "Kanye West", but he is very introspective in his lyrics. The long awaited album was well worth the wait. Here is a track by track review.

1. Tuscan Leather: The album starts up with a Kanye/Passion Pit type sample of Whitney Houston. There is no real hook or chorus. This is pure rapping for nearly 6 minutes. But it still sounds radio friendly at the same time as stated in the lyrics. The song picks up the beat more 2 minutes in turning into a club track. Then it comes back to down tempo toward the end relaxing you then fading out with a sample of "When Seasons Change". Perfect song to listen to while driving around a city like Miami! This is one of my favorite Drake songs. 10/10

Where do I begin. If there is one thing that I am glad that I bought this year it is this album. Drake did amazing on it,. I love every song and listen to it in my car all of the time. This is a MUST BUY. The only problem with my copy was that the case arrived cracked (it was still wrapped), but that did not effect the actual cd itself.

Drake is a lyricist worthy of praise despite the criticism. He addresses many of his issues with his family, creativity and fame. He has a complete album that his signature style and it is one that his fans would appreciate.

Drake has done it again. Although his albums appear to only tell the individual story of the life of an angst driven young man in his mid 20's, I have found them to be full of universal truth. Went to a major comedy event featuring very popular middle aged African American comedians, and not one, but two of the five featured comics, one female and one male, referenced "started from the bottom, now we're here" a universal mantra to which many of us from around the globe can relate. "I love me enough for the both of us" is one of my favorite lines ever. I caught Drake's concert in D.C. shortly after this CD came out, and he really seemed to relate to and appreciate his fans, unlike another ego driven rapper whose show around the same time was so blatantly ego driven that it was hard to relate to, other than as spectacle. Rap powers my running and Drake's latest contribution will provide fuel for years to come...'Swingin'

Classic Drizzy. Veteran fans and new fans alike should enjoy this compilation from the Champagne Papi. I got my money worth! Great Job Drizzy! I don't have a favorite, the whole album is good!
