Jamie Jean Welebob has written a wonderful, entertaining debut with “Nothing Without Shadows”. This is a period piece set in Baltimore that combines romance with werewolves, archeology, antiquities, and a little bit of mystery that perfectly meets the writers objective…giving the reader an enjoyable reading experience.

Iris reads people’s fortunes for a living and she does this from the small room she rents above a speakeasy owned by the brother of her former beau Bartleby. One night Bartleby barges in on her covered in blood raving about being bit by a werewolf. Iris patches him up the best she can and agrees to help him reverse the curse before the next full moon. Of course Iris doesn’t believe in werewolves but she agrees to help him because he truly believes that he will become a werewolf by the next full moon.

During their research Bartleby steals a relic from the very man that she has taken notice of, the same man she sees every time she is at her favorite flower vendor and dreams about the what if’s with a man like Jason. Once she realizes what Bartleby has done and done to the man she fancies, she decides that she can forgive a lot from her former beau but stealing crosses her moral line. Go on a journey with Iris, Jason, and Bartleby into the realm of the supernatural, curses, and antiquities. Be by Iris’ side while she tries to do the right thing but most importantly find out if she finally has a chance at true love and happiness.

Ms. Welebob has written a wonderful debut novel that combines a historical time with the supernatural, mystery and romance. Her characters are authentic, believable, and well written. If this is a combination that you enjoy in a book then I recommend “Nothing Without Shadows” be added to your library.

Jamie Jean Welebob has woven a thoughtful, well-crafted, and genuinely interesting story about antiquities, werewolves, relationships, and the ties that bind us to our past. Iris, vivacious and principled, guides the reader through the story of a woman dealing with a bad boyfriend who is turning into a werewolf. If that description is trite, nothing about the story is.

The three main characters are fully developed, each with their own particular "ghosts of the past." There were many moments I feared the author would tread towards cliche. Each time, she instead presented fresh views on a slew of the most common issues, like coming to terms with religion and one's past.

A period piece, my only issues with the text were occasional hiccups where more modern language and phrasing disrupted the mood and pulled me out of the past. However, these were very few, and far between, and did little to temper my overall love of the book.

All in all, very much worth the read. For 99 cents on Kindle, it is, perhaps, too much of a bargain!

This new author has provided the reader with an interesting journey into a life and time unfamiliar to most modern day readers. The characters are well developed and drive you to keep reading as they draw you into the tale. I am anxiously waiting for the next volume in this tale.

I am accompanied by 18 cats, 2 presumably homosexual ducks, and a myriad of other animals living and dead (perhaps some undead?) as well as a husband.
