Book Description

An amoral violent Chicago enforcer is heading for the sun and ocean breeze of California to the get to the bottom of the recent suspicious death of his sister. He runs into his own kind as soon as the plane touches asphalt, and they don't appreciate him being around. Not content to let the police handle matters, he begins to follow a trail that leads to the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles and Orange County.
He encounters local gang members, a ruthless West Coast mob boss with his private army of mercenaries plus numerous "Hollywood" types. There are plenty of twists and turns until the grim truth is revealed and a rampage of retribution begins. No one in this novella gets a happy ending or an easy way out. When it's over you might want to reconsider that trip to Disneyland. The California State Tourism Board would prefer it if you didn't read this book. You've been warned.

"It's not his turf, it's not his problem, but now it's someone else's. Chicago Violence meets Disney and Hollywood head on as a Mob Enforcer searches the sun beaten streets of Orange County to find his sisters killer."

BIO
Barry Crowther is an award winning writer from Manchester, England who has made his home in San Clemente Southern California. With a litany of short stories in Literary Publications he has applied his strange and stark style to the crime writing genre. Nothing was a long time in the making and is stylistically challenging. He continues to work and write on the follow up novel in the San Clemente sun with his three daughters, wife and chocolate lab Coney.

REVIEW
"I just finished reading NOTHING and loved it. It's noir without over the top descriptions of violence. The protag is a sociopath in search of his sister's murderer. Being inside his head was a trip. It's a very well written, tightly plotted, fast paced read. It's hard to believe it's a novella.
I'm amazed at Barry Crowther's range of writing, his books are very entertaining and completely different from each other.
Crowther has a real talent for bringing characters to life."

5.0 out of 5 stars Different April 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I didn't know what to make of a book titled Nothing. I soon realized it was nothing like I expected. The story is tight and clipped, lots of action, extremely dark shown through the eyes of a sociopath. The style surprised me, but I soon adjusted and once I did, I really enjoyed it. I looked forward to finishing a work shift so I could read a bit more. Barry surprised me again with the unexpected twists towards the end. Despite the squalid settings Barry thrusts us into, I enjoyed this book more than I did his first novel, Missing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Roller Coaster Ride April 19, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Barry Crowther's novella NOTHING leaves me breathless.

It's quite the roller coaster ride with a tightly written, fast-paced plot. A very dark story with a unique style that took me some time to adjust to in the beginning but then it took hold and I finished it in one sitting. My introduction to Crowther came in his first novel,Missing (The Matt Spears Mysteries). Another terrific read!

NOTHING is a very different style, but highly effective and entertaining. The main character is in search of his sister's murderer and along the journey you meet a real range of sleazebags, scum, and other assorted lowlifes. The author has definite talent and a way with words and action that grabs you by the throat and never lets go.

A noir tour de force.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unique style, unique writer, worth a shot! September 12, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have to admit, when i started reading "Nothing", I was taken aback by the somewhat unique style of writing I was presented with from page one. It's rare these days for writers to take risks, and refreshing to see that Barry Crowther has taken some significant ones in this book. This is a situation where I believe the work is one of quality, but it's just not a match with this particular reader.....the phrase 'you can't please all the people all the time' being applicable.

Clearly any creative and artistic work of any merit will receive at least as much rejection as acceptance; even the Beatles are not universally accepted and liked. I am not proud to admit that I suspect this novella requires a person with a bit more imagination and patience than I have at this point in my life. It's not currently my cup of tea, but I am also a person with a currently insanely busy schedule at the moment who probably didn't give it as much time as it deserved. I believe this novella is surely worth the ninety nine cents 'gamble' to decide for yourself. Judging by the other reviews, i am in a clear minority here. I also plan to revisit this novella when my life calms down, as I think it's worthy of a second read.

The book reminded me of the movie "Get Carter". The ending was what I liked best. If you like hard-boiled fiction with an engaging anti-hero this book is for you.

REVIEW

"Missing" by Barry Crowther is a really good fast-paced mystery. This book was a quick read with the action constantly moving. I completely enjoyed the characters, specifically the interaction between the main character, Matt, and his best friend, Nathaniel. The interaction is enjoyable, funny and shows how close they are to each other. I also enjoyed the character building of the "bad guys", along with the twists and turns of the story. I love Matt's "secretary" Trudy and felt like they were the type of people that I would want to know.

The writing style somewhat reminds me a lot of Robert Parker but in an English writing way. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes a good mystery that has good character interaction.

AUTHORS NOTE
Although I live in Southern California most of my novels are set in the North West of England, where I'm from - Manchester. I think it's fair to warn potential readers that a lot of British phraseology is used, and this is a gritty crime drama much closer to the work of Quentin Tarantino than Agatha Christie. I don't want people to buy my books and be left feeling disappointed because there wasn't enough foggy moors, country pubs or old jags ... you've been warned.
