It's All Happening in Elf Power's New One,
By
This review is from: Nothing's Going to Happen (Audio CD)
I usually find "covers" to be boring and uninteresting from any sort of band. My fear, after hearing this album, is that people will bypass it because of the ugly "cover" word. This album is a powerful statement by Elf Power that should silence any critic that labels Elf Power's music as Elephant 6 blah, blah, blah. While you will find the songs done in traditional Elf Power "psych", you will also find some great punk, New Wave, etc. The guitars rip and drums are incredible in "Pay to Cum." There is a great psychadelic version of Sonic Youth's "Cotton Crown." The most impressive effort to me, though, was three songs by Roky Erickson (the best of which is "Unforced Peace"). Ericson is little known singer from the 60s/70s. Check them out and do a google search on Erickson for what is an amazing story of artists who have rediscovered his past and his work.A great CD, I encourage you to explore it!

Punk and new wave covers!!!...,

This is Elf Power's time to shine. They do covers everywhere from Bad Brains to T. Rex and each one is amazing! I would have never thought they could be this accessible yet innovative. If you are a fan of the songs covered or Elf Power you have to buy this! (I borrowed a copy and will be buying it ... that's how good it is!)

Who knew elf power could rock so hard?,

This is just a great album. That's all you can really say about it. Every song on here is worth listening to and although the covers aren't as good as the originals (in most instances) they are all really sincere and have a lot of energy. Besides it wouldn't say much for the bands they were covering if the covers were better anyway. I must agree with the other reviewer that said that the highlight of the album is the roky erickson covers. I've heard of him as the front man for the 13th floor elevators but I didn't realize how interesting his solo stuff is until I picked up this c.d. Now I'm an instant fan of his. In some of his songs that are folk-ish he has a tremor in his voice that you could almost place as being an influence on jeff mangum (neutral milk hotel) but maybe i'm grasping. Either way you should pick up this album, it's a nice reminder of how great the late seventies and early eighties could be. But do yourself a favor and buy it from orangetwin.

too much treble in the vocals,

There so much to like about this band and this CD but they decided to record ALL of the vocals through a filter that makes the singing artificially thin and high-ranged. Wayyyyy too much treble. It sounds over-processed and it is. I suspect it was done because the singer has limited range but I'd rather listen to his real voice than what they have done here to mask it. Blech.
