While Solomon Burke never made a major impact upon the pop audience -- he never, in fact, had a Top 20 hit -- he was an important early soul pioneer. On his '60s singles for Atlantic, he brought a country influence into R&B, with emotional phrasing and intricately constructed, melodic ballads and midtempo songs. At the same time, he was ... 2010 album from the veteran Soul belter. This magnificent album delivers a dozen tracks of timeless Soul magic in the purest Memphis style with the deepest Southern roots. Yet there's not the slightest whiff of nostalgia about the project. Solomon Burke's voice is full-strength, and Willie Mitchell's arrangements flourish in the Hi-style: tight, right horns; rock solid kick drums and mellow bass; country guitar fills, and the sweetest, sparest string arrangements to enhance the romance and the heartbreak of these amazing songs.
Hard to believe that soul masters Solomon Burke and the late Willie Mitchell had never collaborated, since this album proves it's a match made in heaven. If you've ever loved Mitchell's productions with Al Green and Ann Peebles, or appreciated Solomon Burke's legendary music that spans the decades---hell, if you just love that sweet soul music---you have to hear this.
May this last disc and all of your sweet music continue to help bring peace and love to this poor world. Tears are flowing all over the world today 10-10-10.
While this is not one of his greatest album, it is still a 'must have' if you are a Solomon Burke fan. May he rest in peace; his soulful voice will live on.
The combination of strings, brass, beat and the unmistakable voice of Solomon Burke make this album a must for all who enjoy soft, melodic, love music. I did not know of Willie Mitchell as a producer but his touch is nothing short of magnificent. The lyrics combine so well with the music to give a wonderful musical experience. For me a must buy.
I consider it a given that Solomon Burke is a magical performer. He is, like Joe Cocker and others, a fine singer but not a songwriter so my measure of any CD of his is the choice of songs, the arrangements and the production. Sadly, his latest release doesn't score very well on choice of songs, at least not for me. If you love the man buy this. If you don't own any Solomon Burke CDs start elsewhere. The 3 stars are given just for him being him.
