From Library Journal

In a departure from his Nobel prize-winning fiction, Garcia Marquez examines the November 7, 1990, abduction of well-known Colombian journalist Maruja Pachon and her sister-in-law by the "Extraditables," drug traffickers belonging to the Medellin Cartel. Among others kidnapped were the daughter of an ex-president of Colombia and the son of the owner of El Tiempo, Colombia's most important newspaper. The kidnappings were meant to force the government to take a stand against the extradition of drug traffickers to the United States. What ensues is a passionate account of the harrowing experiences suffered by the victims and the negotiations undertaken by Pachon's husband, Alberto Villamizar. A moving, dramatic account on par with the author's best works; recommended for public libraries.?Jorge Gonzalez

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of literary journalism, August 24, 1999
By A Customer
Away from Colombia my native country, I had the chance to read this book. It made me go back to those days and bring back the memories of the news casts, the newspapers and the events that were hitting our country. Garcia Marquez gives a deep view of those days, those events. Reading his book was like reviving the history of those years. Outstandlingly documented, he links all these characters to depict one more sad chapter in our contemporary history, keeping every reader tied to each of its pages until the end. Five stars are not enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars very accurate portrait of colombian's ordeal, January 31, 1998

I have read this book three times. Why? Because my mother was one of the journalists that were kidnapped. Her name is Maruja Pachon and she was held for more than six months. If you want to have an idea of what a terrible ordeal we colombians have faced in our fight against drug-trafficking, do read this book. Nothing in it is made up, trust me. I'm one of the characters in it. If you want to comment the book with me please write me an e- mail.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sad reality about Colombia, January 21, 2003
Noticia de un secuestro is one of Gabriel Garcia Marquez most dry books in terms of the literary style used. It could be because the theme does not allow for much variety but just an honest recount of the truth. The book gives the reader a realistic view of daily Colombian life, a country that has struggled with guerrilla warfare and drug trafficking for the past forty years and more. The protagonists of the book are the victims of the kidnappers and throughout the book we learn about the cruel reality of these people who have changed the life of many Colombians by use of violence and cruel killings without mercy. I think the book was well written with revealing details of how the victims feel (mentally and physically) and how their families suffer when they are forced to negotiate with the drug dealers etc. for the safe return of their family members. Also, we clearly see the role that the government plays in the rescue process. The style used by the author is very journalistic, thus making the book and story very dry in comparison to his other literary works. However, perhaps this style was chosen simply because this is the reality of Colombias daily crisis. The book is excellent, has much eye-opening information and is a wonderful read if you wish to learn more about the socio-economic problems of this great South American country. Arriba Colombia.
