Book Description

10 and upNotorious Americans
Reared in an atmosphere of violence and corruption, it is easy to see how Alphonse Capone was destined for a life of crime. Capone raised organized crime to a new level of sophistication, turning the city of Chicago upside down in the process. How did he get away with it?

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-8-In contrast to other titles in this series, Al Capone tends to focus more on the times than on the man, cursorily covering such topics as jazz, the Florida land boom, Marcus Garvey, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. This approach offers a broad overview and nice perspective from an unbiased point of view, but also makes it more difficult to follow the life of the gangster himself. Within one particular chapter, the narrative shifts from gang operations in Cicero, to the Model T, and then to vacuum cleaners, before returning to Capone. Still, important information is here, supplemented by black-and-white photographs and some particularly interesting Web-site references. For report writing, students will find more in-depth information on the era elsewhere, but the introduction to organized crime makes this a worthy addition to most collections.
