Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

It's hard not to start feeling sentimental after hearing the loose collection of love ballads that comprise the Notting Hill soundtrack. The romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant is filled with the modern sounds of love--as sung by everyone from pop harmonizers (Boyzone, 98 Degrees) to classic soulsters (Bill Withers, Al Green). The Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin'" adds a garage-rock edge, but if you're not up for slow-burning love tunes, this soundtrack probably isn't for you. Two guitar-based score tracks from composer Trevor Jones fill out Notting Hill and add nice instrumental touches to the disc. --Jason Verlinde

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mix for forgotten romantics, December 28, 1999
By A Customer
I never considered myself a romantic but I really love this soundtrack. The bonus track "Everything About You" is a surprise good one, with what I thought was a line stolen from the movie White Men Can't Jump ("I love the way you bring me water when I'm thirsty in your bed"), a couple of oldies but goodies thrown in and unlike some instrumentals the ones on this CD are quite effective and not an automatic "skip" although pretty dry. A particular favourite along with "Everything About You" for me is "She" by Elvis Costello, and "Gimme Some Lovin'" is a good car ride song (makes you want to drive right on over to your boyfriend's place :)) Boyzone's "No Matter What" is fun to pay out and sing along to especially that all too distinctive Ronan Keating's voice "No matter where they take ush" and isn't anyone sick of "When You Say Nothing At All" yet? Actually this is just a fantastic CD for sitting around at home in your underwear alone, turning it way up and singing at the top of your voice. Too 'uncool' to take seriously, it's a great change for unwinding. Damn good stuff.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good mix of tunes, December 29, 1999
By A Customer
I enjoyed the movie and noticed the ideal placement of songs, so I went for the CD. I thought every song was strong and was intrigued by the inclusion of Elvis Costello, a much under-rated, but adored artist. Reminded me of the movie which is a testament to great use of music to support the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good mix of music to a good film, December 31, 1999
I saw this movie in the theater and while it was very good, I found myself paying more attention to the music. The end of the film where they play "She" by Elvis Costello and you see them walking along and sitting in the park, just enjoying life, that is one of the most touching moments I have ever seen on film. That song is simply beautiful. You'll realize after listening to the lyrics that most love songs are very poorly written in comparison. Kudos to the guys behind getting it put on the soundtrack- it saves it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Small Problem
This CD as well as a previous CD I ordered from Amazon came with a cracked plastic case. Didn't affect the CD, but rendered the storage cases ineffective.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great CD!!!
This CD has some great recordings and will never grow old or outdated with time. I bought it for Elvis Costello's rendition of "She," but I love the whole CD.

This soundtrack is great. I especially like the rendition of "She" by Elvis Costello. This is very much a great romantic and slow dance soundtrack.

This was purchased for my daughter - but we both listen to it in the car. Some oldies but apparently still goldies.
