Synopsis, July 9, 2007
This review is from: Nottingham International Chess Tournament 1936 (Paperback)
It is astonishing that the organisers of Nottingham 1936 succeeded in attracting such an illustrious field. This included world champions Euwe, Lasker, Capablanca, Alekhine and Botvinnik, as well as prospective challengers such as Fine, Reshevsky, and Flohr, and aspirants from the past - Bogolyubov, Vidmar and Tartakower.A sparkling field merited sparkling commentary and this was provided in full measure by the former champion Alexander Alekhine. The acerbic clash between himself and Capablanca forms one of the dramatic high points of the book.
Alexander Alekhine was a colossus of chess - twice world champion and a brilliant author, endowed with the secret gift of making the games come alive on the page.
