4.0 out of 5 stars It's a meaningful album that's true to life.
This band shows through it's music the true emotions of living. Love, fear, joy and hate, it's all there. The beats and rhythm of each song provide the perfect mode for it's content. It's powerful and profound at the same time. Everytime you listen to this album you'll hear the lyrics in a different way and something new and wonderful will be heard. Chalk Farm is headed...

3.0 out of 5 stars A lot for one song.
Well, like a good many albums by potential one-hit wonders, the song I bought the album for is the best song on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Visits My CD player pretty frequently..., September 15, 2001

"Zack" (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Notwithstanding (Audio CD)
When "Lie On Lie" hit radio, I thought it was a really good song, and picked up this album. The fact that many other CD's I got at the time are collecting dust, while this one still gets a spin in the player once or twice a month should tell you what I think of this disc. The songs, beginning to end, are well-written, with "Don't Believe" as one of the "could-have-been-a-hit" stand outs on this disc. Not a bad song in the bunch... It's one of those CD's you can just put on and absorb yourself in, as I am now.

Their follow-up CD is called "Three 2's," and is available through TICRecords website. Do a websearch on Excite for TICRECORDS and it should come up - hunt around their site, you'll find it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best CD U've Never Heard of, January 30, 2003
By
This review is from: Notwithstanding (Audio CD)
Chalk Farm was published 6 years ago & the band has split. This CD is it! The music pulses with energy and rocks with abandon only to slow and touch you. "Live Tomorrow" is a thundering electric opener, "Angels spread my wings & see the fences tumble, ageless memories, they watch the strong man crumble at my feet." The CD slows for "Lesson," a soft droning melody punctuated by staccato shotgun bursts of REM-style guitar. "Lie On Lie" has an engaging melody. "I shot a man the other day; the morning sun it shined on me anyway," Michael Duff sings on the midtempo "Hey." "Lose You Now" is an intriguing rocker, "I thought everything was good; you ask me if I love you; what made you think I don't; When I'm trying to show I care, please don't ask about her." "Don't Believe" is another great rocker with a catchy chorus. "Lilly Anne" is a great song that builds into a furious climax. "It's Up to You" is softer, almost folkie, with a pretty melody, "I look for some direction & I find a woman who won't reach me." "The Girl Is Crying" thrashes followed by another softie, "Sunflower." The CD snoozes for 3 minutes before winding up with a hidden track. "Notwithstanding" is a consistently strong set of songs that has lyrical depth as well as rocks on. U snooze U lose! Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh how I love this CD, June 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Notwithstanding (Audio CD)
I came across this band when I worked in Washington DC. They played live at Tower Records (I believe that was the music shop) at lunch time. It was awesome, I bought the CD that day and had it autographed by Michael Duff. Needless to say I was late getting back to work because I hung around to listen to the whole show. What a performance for a lunch time gig. Just like the other reviews, this is one CD that is played over and over again. I just learned through the reviews that they split---such a shame. Go out and get this one, it's worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars They're broken up but this CD's still here, February 19, 2001
This review is from: Notwithstanding (Audio CD)
Yeah, it's true, Chalk FarM has broken up a while ago, and I believe it happened mainly due to the lack of success that this album recieved. It deserved a lot more than it got. This is one of the best albums I own, and probably ever will. They had it. I just don't understand why it didn't work out. Buy it and wish they were still around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff, May 7, 2000

I haven't heard music that affected me this much in a long time. These artists have a unique style, powerful, inspiring lyrics, and impressive musical talent. The only thing they don't seem to have is luck. Anyone who's heard this cd loves it -- unfortunately, there are very few of us, and I'm not sure why. Basically they've got everything you could ask for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music, June 18, 2007
This review is from: Notwithstanding (Audio CD)
I really like this cd. It gets played on a regular basis and is like an old comfortable sweat shirt. I went to high school with Toby, and he's still the king of syncopated rhythm. He is such an amazing drummer and I hope he's found his rhythm again since Chalk Farm has split up. Please forgive my bias, but I still think this cd rocks.

5.0 out of 5 stars the music industry has gone mad, December 26, 1999

This album is fabulous. I hate that Chalk Farm is not given the recognition it deserves. Tracks such as "Sunflower" and "Live Tomorrow" give a dose of the true feel of this horribly underrated album.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Don't Understand the Music Business, November 24, 1999
By
Davidro (Bellevue, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Notwithstanding (Audio CD)
Music is incredibly personal, but I still don't understand why this album hasn't hit the Big Time. I come back to it over and over, impulsively cranking the volume on evey other tune (Wonder and The Girl is Crying are my favorites, but they really all rock). I don't think they sound like Better Than Ezra; I hear a slicker version of another great, obscure band, the Gigolo Aunts. It's really worth giving it a spin.
