Amazon Verified Purchase
A few details so you can comprehend the "why" of this purchase. Grabbed this for my 87 yr old Mom, hospitalized in the critical care ward for a week following a fall, per fractured ribs and a punctured lung. She spent another 2 weeks in a rehab facility. I wanted to be sure she'd be protected while staying with me after discharge. The item had to be portable, as at some point, she'll insist that I return her to her home in another state.
First, have no concerns about actually putting this thing together. It literally took less than 5 minutes, as it's very intuitive. No tools required. It comes out of the box folded, so most of it is ready to go. The rest is just a matter of matching up protrusions with holes, and popping that section in.
Second, I purchased after reading some specifics about it elsewhere. This is actually a 3-in-1 device. It can be used:
1) For the stated purpose, that is, a portable commode. If there's room to walk along the side of the bed, there's likely enough room to situate this.
2) If you fold the seat down and lower the overall height (again, easy/quick!), you can set it in a tub. Your loved one can then sit and bathe comfortably and securely, as s/he will remain surrounded by the framed rails. Out of the box, each leg ends with a sturdy rubber thingie, so no fears re slippage on ceramic.
3) Finally, you can slide the whole thing over/around your current commode, which then adds the desired secure framed railing to that spot as well. It also raises the seat, for additional comfort. I'm a fairly small woman, and the weight of transporting this from room to room = no stress whatsoever.
I saw this at one of the well-known box stores, selling for more than double the price here ($77). I have been so pleased (relieved!!) with this item that I actually made calls to those with older loved ones, so they will be aware of it if/when needed. I recommend Nova 8700-R Folding Commode, without reservation.

I write solely because I know how nervous I was about "getting the right thing" for my treasured Mom, so I'm trying to spare others. This is truly a gem.

We just bought this commode because we were tired of trying to fit my daughter's non-folding pediatric commode into our van. It is easy to adjust and sturdy. With the lid attached it folds down to about 9". To fold the commode you must cinch the legs to their shortest point and flip the seating up to rest on the arm frames. The trick is to pop the pins back into the holes on the legs. The lid is not solid and has two small protruding protectors. It would be uncomfortable to rest against the lid. The bucket is small, about 7" in depth but we traded this out with our standard bucket of 9". The seat hole is just slightly larger than the bucket but there was no spills. This is a very affordable folding commode and we can't wait to travel.

Took this on a ten-day car trip with a loved one who's used to a bedside commode at night. This commode was wonderful -- very easy to set up and then fold again for the next leg of the trip. The box fits into a contractor-size trash bag so you can walk through a hotel lobby without advertising that you have a commode with you. The box has a handle for carrying, and the weight is manageable. At one site, I adjusted the commode to a higher height to use as toilet rails -- worked fine.
This folding commode cost a little more than some of the others I considered, but I found it well worth the price. I was happy every time I adjusted it -- worked perfectly, no strain at all, certainly no tools needed.
