5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Family Tree Software on the Market! November 25, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Disc|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This family tree software integrates with the Ancestry.com website and if you keep a family tree, this is a very, very good thing.

There are three versions of this software package offered:
-Essentials: The software, a 22 page “Quick Start Guide,” and a 1 month membership to Ancestry.com.
-Deluxe: The same as “Essentials” above but with a 3 month membership to Ancestry.com
-Platinum: The software, a 314 page instruction book, a disc with photo-editing software (which I have not used,) and six months membership to Ancestry.com

This offer is only for the US membership to Ancestry.com, which is currently about $20 a month. If you do the math, the Platinum edition is worth about one hundred and twenty bucks of free membership! If you are already a member of Ancestry.com or if you already subscribe to the World membership level, you will receive credit for the US membership against what you owe. To receive this offer, you need to call the customer service number and speak to a very nice rep.

The difference between the Platinum edition and the Essentials edition of this software is the offer of free membership and what comes in the box. The software is exactly the same.

If you are new to Ancestry.com, a free one month membership may be all you need.

I have been nurturing a family tree (in cooperation with several far-flung relatives) on Ancestry.com for quite a while now. If you are even slightly interested in your family's history, Ancestry.com is an amazing subscription web site that is well worth investigating.

A massive data base that is constantly growing and evolving, Ancestry.com provides information about people who lived in almost every country in the world.

3.0 out of 5 stars Potential Hidden Costs December 30, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Disc|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
On its own, the software is only as good as the knowledge you already have. When using the website Ancestry.com, the software becomes more powerful, giving the user access to the databases on the website.

I've poked around Ancestry.com a few times (without buying a membership) but this was the first time while using the software. The software itself is slow to load, getting stuck on “application initializing” pop-up. I would then close out the application and attempt to open it again. Once I was able to use the software, I found it fairly easy to use for the most part but could be more user friendly.

The one month free subscription to Ancestry.com which is included is only accessible by signing up on the website using a credit card. If you choose to do this you must also cancel the subscription by the end of the free month or your card will be charged for continued membership. I’m not crazy about this and would have preferred the free subscription was activated using a special code rather than my credit card.

Conclusion, it’s an okay software program but is best utilized only if you’re willing to pay for a subscription to Ancestry.com unless you can get all the information you need in during the free month.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Once it is Debugged. November 28, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Disc|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Ancestry/com and I are old friends as I have been a subscriber for years and have built an extensive family tree. This product is very touchy to install and sync, though. It took me over a week of trying several times daily to get it to import any of my family tree and to begin to sync changes to the online tree and the new hard drive tree. Once it began to work, however, it has done an outstanding job and will allow me to share our tree with my siblings and our children. I do recommend it, but with the caution that you may have to spend some time with customer service to get it to work properly.

4.0 out of 5 stars To upgrade or not to upgrade? June 9, 2014
Platform for Display:PC Disc
I intend to write this review for those who already use FTM (like I do) and are thinking of upgrading. Bottom line is yes, provided your use of the program is similar to mine. I suspect most users will not be like me though.

My database is very large (over 60,000 individuals). I have used several versions of FTM, two of which are based on the current basic interface that I believe started with FTM 2009. This interface is something I have always really liked. At least I personally have found it better than other genealogy programs out there. But there were some big flaws in the earlier versions that have been mostly addressed with FTM 2014.

In older versions, there was a sporadic problem with sluggishness in the sourcing feature that cropped up from time to time. The program does background crunching connected to the sourcing window that needs to happen before it is ready for my next input - this delay can last several seconds or even up to a minute or so. This could be very annoying and not related to whether the file was in need of compaction. There were also funky things happening with the background indexing, also contributing to this sluggishness. Basically these performance related issues don't seem to happen as much anymore with my version of FTM 2014 that I have been using for the last half year or so. (By the way, I encountered the performance problem on two previous versions on various computers and operating systems).

Other software packages have better validation tools - I knock off a star for that and the fact that.the relationship indicator still does not necessarily display, by default, the closest relationship from the home person. This relationship is shown in the tree view screen that allows you to edit the facts.
