Platform for Display:PC Disc|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Ancestry.com offers a free 14 day subscription and I strongly recommend that if you're a new genealogist (family history researcher) to use that to test out the very intuitive web interface. You'll be able to spend those two weeks to test the US based databases covering everything from actual US Census pages to World War I draft registrations to marriage registries dating back a couple of centuries. Note that you will not have access to international records; you will have to pay more to get access to those in any case. The US only databases you can access during the trial are the same ones you'll get if you purchase any of the standard Ancestry.com products.

The differences between the various versions basically boil down to being able to get 1 month (Essentials), 3 months (Deluxe), and 6 months (Platinum) of access to Ancestry.com databases. A credit card is required to activate an Ancestry.com account in order to use the "free" access that comes with Family Tree Maker (FTM). I recommend once you activate your free three months, go into your "My Account" options and immediately cancel your subscription. Don't fear, you'll STILL have access to the great databases offered (US only, see caveat below) for the full one/three/six months; by cancelling immediately you just won't be faced with automatic renewal charges. You should also go to Ancestry.com's web site and check out the cost for accessing their databases. If the cost of buying this product is LESS than the cost of buying access for the same time period directly from Ancestry.com .

2.0 out of 5 stars Longtime FTW User, Not thrilled with this edition October 28, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Disc|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I've used Family Tree Maker since 1999, with periodic upgrade purchases, and have been a genealogist since 1990. I can't recommend this version.

The program took over an hour to install, and then I spent another fifteen minutes slowly importing my family trees into it the new edition. Prior editions installed over the old one in minutes, and you were ready to go. This time I sat waiting...and waiting...and couldn't use my computer in the meantime. Want instant gratification? You ain't gonna get it here.

This program requires a new learning curve for those accustomed to older versions. The first thing it did was change my "home person" from me to another individual who isn't even a relative (he's in a collateral family line), and I had to hunt for the tool to change it back. Annoyance #1.

The older edition came with a free trial to Ancestry that simply required you to create a log-in. Family Tree Maker Deluxe comes with a "free trial" that requires you to input a credit card for the "free" trial....thus giving them your personal information and the possibility that you'll forget to cancel before they ding your credit card. Annoyance #2.

The screen is extremly busy, although it matches the Ancestry program perfectly. I suspect that's the purpose of the entire edition; to manipulate genealogists into moving back and forth between Ancestry and Family Tree Maker, hopefully giving Ancestry your painstaking labor and research for free. Oh. and don't forget to pay those expensive membership fees!

If you want to link with Ancestry, you may like this edition. If not, it's a frustrating and annoying process to re-learn to use. Previous editions had an extremely simple, user-friendly program that was easy to read and move around in. I'm not happy at all, and will downgrade back to Family Tree Maker 16 and pass this edition on to another relative.

You don't even want to consider using this 2014 bug ridden version of FTM. I have been a user of FTM since it's inception and have migrated to each new version as they were introduced. Never ever had an issue or problem until the upgrade to Family Tree Maker 2014. This version continually crashes in both Windows 7 and 8 when opening and you get the error message Family Tree Maker has encountered an error and needs to close." Support consists of pages of suggestions, all of which don't work and you will uninstall and reinstall the program. That solution works for a week or two until the next crash. Stay with FTM 2012 AND DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES UPGRADE TO 2014.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good versatile genealogy software program November 9, 2013
Platform for Display:PC Disc|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
If you do not have a genealogy program then you could try this one. It was an easy install (but I have a fast processor laptop) and converting from FTM 2012 was also quite fast. It imported all the records.

I did not like the screen as it is very busy but for the newbie it would be OK. Once the program started it wanted an upgrade which updated quickly. After that it wanted to register the software. As part of the registration is creating (or activating) a membership in Ancestry.com. Since I have a guest membership it took it. The program comes with a 3-month membership in Ancestry but wants your credit card and will start charging $19.99 a month unless you remember to cancel it. I chose not to do it as I would probably forget about it.

For the newbie, I would recommend that you do the tutorials as this software is not as intuitive as the previous versions.

If you load an existing family tree, there are two views that are useful: pedigree and family view. I liked them both as it was easy to navigate.

Overall not many changes from the 2012 version except that it takes longer to load the program.

I prefer to use Roots Magic as my genealogy software as it has a direct link to FamilySearch.org which is free to use. Sure it has less information than Ancestry but I do not feel like paying $19.99 each month for that privilege.
