I bought this progam two years ago at a discount of $10.00 off the listed price.
It's a great buy. I have Rosetta Stone for German, $300.00 and this compares to it in many ways, quite well.

The other reveiw mentioned a sound problem, I suspect that the problem was with the person sound system and not the software. I have installed this on two computers and it plays perfectly well on each. This progam is more powerful than the Rosetta Stone in that it goes deeper into explaining the German grammar. It has sections on German verbs and while it has its drawbacks it works. The video conversations work well and all the words are explained in a integrated way. For the price this is well worth the investment.

If you work with the program and sticks to it, you will quickly get a basic mastery of German.

This series is not as good as the one Berlitz published over a decade ago. The introductory music for each section is louder than any of the voices so I find myself constantly adjusting the volume. The content is good, but the English commentator is annoying and is also louder than the German. I bought the CDs to hear German, yet that is the most difficult part to hear. Even on the beginning CD, the German speakers are talking at near native speed. So I cannot hear the distinction between important sounds like the minimal pair aus and auf. I have two Master's degrees, one in foreign language and the other in foreign language instruction. With over a decade of teaching language at high schools and universities, I can assure you that beginners need "mother speak," which is slower and more clearly annunciated speech in order to learn to reproduce the sounds correctly. Later CDs should be faster, but the level one materials need to be slower and more clear. And they need to adjust the volume to be the same throughout. The product did not meet my expectations.

I studied German for 2+ years in college, so admittedly my learning curve for German is pretty low. However, I think Berlitz German Premier will be a good solution for everyone in my family. I can't see spending $250+ on a software package, when all I want is to become (once again) familiar with the language and improve my speaking skills in anticipation of a visit to Germany. The greatest software in the world isn't as good as a classroom, so this product at $40 is a great compromise. For the person who can't understand the "native speed" pronunciations--did you click on the "turtle" icon to slow them down? I have not had any issues with sound. So far (5 parts into Lesson 1 of Vocabulary), I am pleasantly surprised with Berlitz. Again, I have studied German (10 yrs ago), so I understand that some of it will come back naturally. But my wife stood behind me at one point, practicing speaking a language she's never been exposed to--and she began to absorb the material. I would recommend Berlitz--or, I would guess, Instant Immersion German--over something like Rosetta Stone. Unless you have $250+ at your disposal to spend on something that might work, I'd recommend choosing a software package that does not set you back much, like Berlitz. Then try it, and see if it helps!

I have a rule that I tend to stick with when shopping. I research everything thoroughly first... usually.

I saw this program in an Office Max for $40 sitting next to the Rosetta Stone program priced at ~$250. I thought, "hey this might not be as good as the Rosetta Stone software, but it can't be too much worse, right?" I was horribly wrong. From the minute I launched the program I realized that it is formatted in utter chaos. For instance, there is not any indication as to where you should start and when you do hop into one of their lessons, there seems to be other sub-trees that branch off into various other "exercises". This is done in such an unorganized way that I don't feel that I would ever be able to navigate back to a previous lesson. In fact, every lesson the I happened upon was merely by chance.

I spurred up one last ray of hope, thinking that perhaps I was using the program in an inefficient way and began to do some research on the net. Unfortunately, I soon found that others had the same feelings as myself across all of their language offerings. Long story short, I am going to attempt to return this piece of (expletive) and spend the extra money on the Rosetta Stone.

I very highly recommend against purchasing this product.

I received this product within the shipping time specified, and it was brand new.

The product itself is definitely worth the money if you are a self-learner and have the discipline skills to dedicate your time to learning a foreign language. I loved how I could control what was read aloud to me, and how fast (the turtle button is extremely helpful for those struggling with listening comprehension or picking up the accent). I also love how it tracks how many words you have been exposed to. The vocabulary tests are customizable in that you can add multiple vocabulary lists to a test, or only test on what you just learned.

I recommend this product for those who are serious about learning a foreign language and understand what it takes to learn one. You will not be fluent by the time you finish the software (only true immersion in a language accomplishes that), but you will have a good grasp on the basics of the German language and a head-start on pronunciation.

I don't recommend this for someone who is trying to become completely fluent in a short amount of time, but it is wonderful if you want to see if you are interested in seriously studying German (or trying to catch up or prepare for further German study).
