He's back! A man wandered into the Italian Alps about 5,000 years ago and never returned--until his astonishingly well-preserved body was discovered by hikers in 1991. Return of the Iceman by Nova looks at the scientific research--and political controversy--that emerged from this spectacular find. Using CAT scanning and carbon dating, scientists were able to learn much about the man's health and lifestyle, from the tools he used to the foods he ate, giving us much greater insight into the life of our ancestors during the Stone Age. Much of the research was conducted in Austria, but after surveyors determined that the body was found in Italian territory, a small battle was launched to return the body to its "homeland." The research continues, however, and the outstanding science reporting we expect from Nova keeps us informed and amazed. --Rob Lightner

5.0 out of 5 stars Mountain Trek, March 28, 2001

This review is from: Nova: Ice Mummies Return of Iceman [VHS] (VHS Tape)
A long time ago, an older man covered his tattooed body with a grass cape and put on insulated footwear to trek through the Alps. The RETURN OF THE ICEMAN did not take place until some 5,300 years later when he was found by hikers. The Nova team covers carbon dating and CAT scanning, deciding whether Austria or Italy had the stronger claim to keeping the mummy, and preserving the artifacts and the body. With the closeups of the iceman's tools and weapons and with the impressive mountain scenery, the video is in good company with Cathy East Dubowski's ICE MUMMY: LOST...AND FOUND, David Getz's FROZEN MAN, Ron Knapp's MUMMIES, Don Lessem's THE ICEMAN, Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's SECRETS OF THE ICE MAN, and Charlotte Wilcox's MUMMIES & THEIR MYSTERIES. Some of the scientists in Austria went on to help Dr Johan Reinhard with his high-altitude find a couple of years later (DISCOVERING THE INCA ICE MAIDEN).
