4.0 out of 5 stars This is the definitive book on the NSDTR breed

3.0 out of 5 stars A little about a lot
So far I haven't read all of this book, but what I have read I have really enjoyed. I ordered this book because I'm looking into buying my first toller puppy. For some background, this is my first dog, but I was raised with hunting dogs (Chessies and Goldens). I'm reading other training books, and I was mostly seeking information about what to expect some Tollers, and...

If you are seriously considering adopting a Toller, then this book is a must-have reference. Ms. Strang encapsulates key information and lays it out in an easily-accessible format. She discusses the history, breeding, and temperament of the Toller in a comprehensive and interesting way. The step-by-step grooming section (and accompanying photos of the late, great Barney) is the best I've seen to date. It's rare to find a groomer familiar with the breed in the US; most assume they are small Goldens and that grooming is done similarly. Au contraire! When I used to bring my dog to a groomer, I learned years ago to bring a photocopy to serve as their cheat sheet/user's guide. Due in no small part to this section (and some hands-on training-thanks, Alison and Sandy MacF!), I now groom my own dogs. This reference has enriched our knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of the breed. We suggest it to people who meet our dogs and want to learn more. I definitely recommend it for anyone interested in this intelligent, active and keen breed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete reference to the Toller., September 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (Paperback)
We have a Toller and thought we knew quite a bit about their history and characteristics. Hah! Alison and Gail have found every little detail you would ever need or want. Their pictures are magnificent, especially if you know some of the subjects. Now I have a great tool to hand people when they say, "You have a what?" Brava to you ladies, this is a real breed and these are real special little dogs.

This fantastic book really gets into all corners and hide-outs of the Toller. Alison's and Gail's knowledge of this dog is simply amazing. We as breeders show the book to all our friends in the dog world, and many of them has already bought it. Simply fantastic. Thanks Gail and Alison

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best book on Tollers, February 2, 2006
This review is from: The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (Paperback)
This is still the definitive book on the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Almost anything you want to know about the breed is here: its history, pedigrees of some well-known ancestors of today's Tollers, training information, even a full pictorial on how to groom a Toller from start to finish. Alison Strang and Gail McMillan share their love of the breed as well as their knowledge. I recommend this book to every Toller owner or would-be Toller owner, since your life won't be the same once one of these little red rascals joins your family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never owned a dog before!, January 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (Paperback)
It was so exciting to see dogs from my toller's genealogy scattered throughout the book. I didn't know he had such a pedigree, but I guess they are all related. Good info for a new owner, especially the history and grooming sections. Only thing I wish was included is food suggestions, amounts, recipes (there was one). A wonderful book from a wonderful, gracious lady...Alison kindly directed me to a breeder and now our family is complete. Hope the authors will update one day.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book and a must for any dog library, September 15, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (Paperback)
The book caputres your intrests all the way through, with its background, history, wonderful pictures and discussions of breeders who deeply care about this breed. Even my mother, a person not obsessed with dogs like me, was fascinated by the writings and history of this breed. The book caputres the true spirit of the breed and shows how special this little duck dog is. It is a must for every Toller owner and history lover . It is well worth the investment.
