Nova Volume 3: The Super Skrull, Silver Surfer and Galactus...oh my!, June 2, 2010
This review is from: Nova Vol. 3: Secret Invasion (v. 2) (Paperback)
Nova Volume 3: Secret Invasion is another exciting chapter in the life of the last Nova Centurion, Richard Rider.
In Nova Volume 3, Nova struggles to evacuate a planet about to be eaten by Galactus. But holding up his efforts is an evil murderous entity possessing the inhabitants of the planet, gruesomely slaughtering innocents and sabotaging Richard Riders efforts to evacuate them before Galactus destroys them all. In an effort to buy time, Nova must face off against the Silver Surfer as well as Galactus himself.
The story also sees Richard Rider returning to earth to deal with the Skrulls "Secret Invasion". Helping him is his former ally from Annihilation Conquest...The Super Skrull. But is the disgraced Skrull warrior trying to help Nova or is it all a ploy to get back into the good graces of the Skrull Empire?
While still very entertaining, Nova Volume 3 has the unenviable task of wrapping up loose story threads (The Secret Invasion) and starting new ones (The rebuilding of the Nova Corp) as well as reuniting Richard Rider with his parents and brother. Not as fluid as Volume 1&2 but still a very entertaining read. Nova Volume 3 collects issues 13 thru 18. Recommended.

Nova vs. Galactus and the Silver Surfer!, May 12, 2009
This review is from: Nova Vol. 3: Secret Invasion (v. 2) (Paperback)
The planet of Orblicin has become the next feast for Galactus. Nova arrives to assist in the evacuation. Sounds bad? Well a parasitic organism known as Harrow is capitalizing on the chaos. He is taking psychic control of the refugees and causing mass murder. What is Nova to do? Throw in a fight with the Silver Surfer and you've got an awesome story arc.
The second story arc involves a secret invasion tie in featuring the Super-skrull and New Warrior DarkHawk. Pretty cool...huh? Love this book. The writing for Nova has been solid. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning have done a great job thus far. Hats off to everyone involved on this title. Great stuff! Certainly one of the best Marvel has going on right now.

Cosmic Comics Done Right, February 25, 2011
This review is from: Nova Vol. 3: Secret Invasion (v. 2) (Paperback)
After two volumes of the Worldmind Computer (the repository of the now dead Xanadarian Culture and guiding force of the Nova Corps) pleading with Richard Rider (Nova) to protect it and stay out of danger, things come to a head in this volume when Nova is summoned to a planet being devoured by Galactus. As the story begins, Nova acknowledges the futility of confronting Galactus. However, an evil creature possessing the refugees and using them to spread chaos, coupled with Galactus' devouring preventing the escape ships from launching leads Richard to confront Galactus, only to come face to face with his current herald, the Silver Surfer. What follows is a cataclysmic event for Nova leading him to Earth during the Skrull invasion and a government research lab, Project Pegasus.
Throughout these adventures, Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning reunite Nova with the Super Skrull, Darkhawk, and another surprise cosmic hero. Nova must cope with the repercussions of his confrontation with the Silver Surfer, reunite with his parents (whom he left after witnessing the fall-out of the Civil War) and brother, while protecting Project Pegasus from the Skrulls.
Abnett and Lanning outdid themselves with this volume. The confrontation with Galactus and the Silver Surfer were perfect, reminding us that even though Rich has the entire Nova Force at his command, there are still cosmic players who outclass him in about every way. We get to see Richard deal with the consequences of his actions both of his decision during the Galactus conflict, but also of his previous quick exit form Earth in the first volume. The pacing is quick, but suspenseful and there are surprises galore throughout the story, as you read through the twists and turns of this well planned out volume.
