I've just received my Launchkey 49 and I am putting it through it's paces in Ableton Suite. It came well packaged, and the box has a handle so it could double as a temporary carrying case. It also includes a 6' USB cable and a couple registration cards. No CD's are included, you'll need the internet to download software/drivers.
So far I've just been noodling around and playing some chords/scales to get a feel for the key layout. They aren't narrow or compact and at this point I feel confident in saying the keys play great. They are fairly stiff, velocity sensitive, and feel similar to a nicer semi-weighted keyboard. The keys are a durable plastic constrution, I think they are better than a lot of other keyboards in the $200 dollar range.
The sliders and knobs feel a little on the flimsy side (they can be wiggled around slightly), but I think they'll endure a lot of use so long as it is fairly gentle.
Knobs are not rotary encoders that you can scroll endlessly, but just simple pots that export standard 000-127 midi values and only rotate about 290 degrees.
Sliders are really smooth and have a little resistance to them so an accidental brush from a jacket/shirt sleeve/ect probably won't move them around.
The pads are very firm but still sensitive, sometimes it takes a good thwack to get the full velocity out of a strike on them. I LOVE that they change color/state with launching clips in Ableton, as this is a very useful feature.
The pitch and mod wheels are also very smooth, coated with a dry feeling textured plastic. It isn't the gummy rubber you find on some keyboards, but it still has a lot of grip. Not to mention, they have a notch in the wheel for easy manipulation.
The rest of the buttons are all your standard gummy interface buttons.

Verified Purchase
I'm upgrading from an M-Audio Radium 49-key MIDI/USB controller (same price in 2005), which started to send ghost messages from a couple of pots. At first, it was a filter-able MIDI controller, but when it started tweaking my faders in Logic, it was time to retire the old silver beast.

The Launchkey build quality is excellent. Hitting keys on the old M-Audio, you'd hear hollow plastic resonating, and cheap springs straining. When you hit keys on the Launchkey, it makes nearly zero noise. They keys are also smooth enough to do runs and slides, P-funk bassline style, without the mechanical noise of the controller getting louder than the sound you're playing. The heavier keys of the M-Audio Axiom would tear up your fingers if you tried the same. Response time over USB is also excellent--much faster than the M-Audio, either via USB or MIDI.

The drum pads on Launchkey are great. I like the feel, but then I'm used to the no-throw NI Maschine. It's nice that they light up when you hit them, and the placement in the center of the keyboard is smart. Banging on drum pads on the end of a keyboard could make wobbly danger. In theory, these add an additional 16 keys to your controller--when not in special Live mode, they trigger MIDI notes for drums, samples, whatever. But I couldn't find a quick way to shift which keys these pads play, so they were redundant unless I moved the range of the main keys way up or down.

The sliders and knobs feel light but fairly solid. They have nice dead-zones at the start of end of their range, which will hopefully prevent outbursts of random data down the road. Pitch and Mod wheels have a quality feel, with a little side wobble. Their throws seem short to me, but maybe that's just me.

This is a great midi controller for the price.

Likes:
- Great integration with Ableton Live (and other DAW software). It automaps controls in a very nice way, and you can quickly switch between auto-mapped surface control and midi cc modes, without touching your computer.
- Visual feedback. Things light up and change color. You can launch / stop / etc. clips in Ableton session view easily and it gives you visual feedback.
- Nice action. Keys feel great for the price.
- Includes lots of knobs / sliders / pitch and mod wheels.
- Good performance. Low latency on my macbook air.
- Includes virtual instrument plugins for bass station and v station, two really decent models of analog synths.

Dislikes:
- Kinda wish it had standard MIDI serial in/out.

Other thoughts:
- On mac, w/ ableton, you can use AU plugins or VST. The VST plugins crash ableton everytime you close them after use. The AU plugins do not. For me, it works much better when you don't enable VST plugins in the Ableton preferences, but only use the AU plugins.
- Does not ship with a CD, you have to download the plugins. This is probably best, as you always get the most updated software. For the MIDI side, it does not require a driver (being a standard USB MIDI device), AFAICT.

Overall very, very happy with this controller for the price.

I've been producing music for 15+ years now, and this is by FAR one of the best MIDI controllers I've used. The keys are SOLID. They're slightly heavier than most synth-weighted keyboards, and I much prefer it to the looser, more flimsy-feeling M-Audio Radium/Oxygen keys. The build quality is SOLID (especially on the faders), and Ableton Live recognized it right away. No need to install drivers!!

Plus you also get Bass Station and V-Station for free, included when you register your product.

The drum pads feel great, I've been using them more frequently than my M-Audio Trigger Finger. I love the feel of the knobs as well.

This things is simple, solid, and gets the job done. I've only used it for a day and I can already tell it's reliable -- not to mention super lightweight!

Awesome!!
