5.0 out of 5 stars Baricco is back to Ocean and Music, May 12, 2000
By
Claudia (Catania, Italy) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Novecento: Un Monologo (Universale Economica Feltrinelli) (Italian Edition) (Paperback)
Novecento contains all the originality of baricco, enhancing his sense of humor and creating an unforgettable character. Born on a ship, pianist Novecento is the typical man on the 1900s literature: unlike the 1800s literary traveler, Novecento loves his ship and is afraid of leaving it. but his fear is depicted by Baricco in such rational and suggestive terms that the reader just can't help it but love the eccentric pianist. Those who are familiar with baricco will appreciate the simple yet involving language and style, which baricco masters and chisels as he wish to make one actor on a simple stage show the ocean and the music -two things baricco has no equals in describing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful tale: proprio meraviglioso, August 9, 2004
This review is from: Novecento: Un Monologo (Universale Economica Feltrinelli) (Italian Edition) (Paperback)
I can't believe that this book hasn't been published in English. Or is just that they changed the title and I cannot find it?
Anyway, if you like the books of Baricco you will have that all of his art is condensed in the hundred pages of this monologe: the sea, the music, the inner adventure, the magic...
The language is amazingly simple it gives the impression that writting is easy... until you try.
The plot is simple: Novecento was born and abandoned in a boat crossing the Atlantic. The crew adopted him and he spent there all his life, refusing to ever set foot on the land. On the boat he learnt to play piano and became the biggest pianinst of his time. Or at least is what the people that heard him claim. Another pianist, the so-called "father of the jazz" will try to prove them wrong by defying Novecento in a musical duel.

5.0 out of 5 stars impressions and languages, January 17, 2007
This review is from: Novecento: Un Monologo (Universale Economica Feltrinelli) (Italian Edition) (Paperback)
I was heavily impressed by this book. Like no other book it follows me for years and makes me smile, cry, dream, imagine at any mention or thought of it. I wish so much to express my highest respect and gratitude to Baricco for making many days of my life a dream to live.
This is what life is about - tiny special moments that let us feel the eternity in all its glory.
I am lucky to be able to read many languages so i have copies of it in German, Italian and French. I have given many copies of this book to people i love. Unfortunately i have many "english speaking only" friends and grieve for the fact that they cannot read this wonderful book.
I would like to co-appeal with the first reviewer to have someone publish this book in english.
thanks
