Book Description

Penny Reed’s hopes for the future came to a crashing halt when her father died, making her a ward of the state. Knowing her grandfather was still alive and recognizing she’d never survive in the “system,” she stole her father’s boat and sailed away.

Forrest Reed was a man who danced to the beat of his own drum. Having little tolerance for most people and appalled by the worsening political climate in America, he created his own island somewhere in the Pacific to escape the madness. He thoroughly enjoyed his quiet, sheltered existence. Imagine his surprise when Penny showed up, claiming to be his granddaughter. Could Forrest say good-bye to a life of solitude, making room in his heart for his only grandchild, or would events from a painful past always stand between them?

Editorial Reviews

Review

I really enjoyed reading Novel Ideas. The story line was different from any other book I've read and the character of Forrest Reed was intriguing. The first time I read the book, I couldn't wait to see whether he would change his stance on some situations, namely raising the girl who claimed to be his granddaughter...who was an absolute delight to get to know!

Imagine reading about a stubborn man who created his own island because he couldn't get along with society. What about his 12-year-old granddaughter who sailed a boat 17,000 miles just to find him, not knowing whether he would accept her? The characters were certainly well presented and truly brought life to the story; I began to think of them as dear friends who let me intrude on their lives for a while and was sorry to let them go.

However, there were lessons learned and important values taught and it certainly was an accurate portrayal of what it's like to show courage no matter what situation one faces. I'd strongly encourage Novel Ideas for people who enjoy a pleasant story with a little conflict built into it as well as those who suffer with issues relating to a lack of self-esteem. ~ Norma Budden

From the Author

There are so many kinds of oppression in the world, but the worst is the oppression of ideas and of spirit to succeed with them. I have the utmost respect for those with the courage to strive despite their detractors and naysayers and find a way to accomplish something. They see obstacles as not only a challenge, but a threat - and eliminate them. They won't be chained down. They will even stand their ground against an oncoming tank. Those are the people who inspire me to look upon my own blocked paths as mere inconveniences, not worthy of note compared to what others have overcome.

I hope this little adventure in spirit can serve the same to others who feel the weight of the world on them - whether it really is or is only perceived to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars A PLEASANT SURPRISE October 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is not my normal genre, but was recommended to me so I bought it and was pleasantly surprised.

The story is set in 2040.
Forrest Reed is the hero, a seventy year old author who had earned over two hundred billion dollars from his books. He was so disillusioned with living in the US that he custom-built a floating island, and tethered it to the ocean floor in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

His ideal lifestyle is turned upside down by the arrival of Penny, the granddaughter he didn't know existed. On her own she had sailed thousands of miles from the US to find to him.

I thought Penny was a bit bratty in the beginning but she redeemed herself as the story progressed. In fact she became quite heroic in her endeavours to save the world. I can't say much more because it would spoil the story.

Forrest had some wonderful gadgets in his island paradise. I particularly liked Hobson, the electronic butler. Some of the gadgetry was far-fetched, but so cleverly interwoven into the story it became believable and added extra dimension to the story.

Novel Ideas has all the ingredients of a great story - likeable characters, good versus evil, a young girl winning over the crusty old man. What's not to love about this?

5.0 out of 5 stars Future Gone Dead September 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
JC Allen creates a future where reading and physical play for children has been replaced by a virtual world in NOVEL IDEAS. His futuristic (2044) novel is a powerful leasson for all ages.
Penny Reed, age 12, is an outcast and a ward of the state who steals her father's sailboat and travels across the Pacific to find her grandfather. Forrest Reed is a renown writer who has chosen the life of a recluse to escape a totalitarian US.
Forrest doesn't not even know he has a granddauther and he commands her to leave. Penny does in the face of a fierce storm while Forest learns to truth.
The two a reunited and begin a saga of cultural intervention that has the UN wobbling on the brink of a world war. What is so evil that the super powers will risk all to gain control of a twelve-year-old.
This is a three read story, first for the story, second for the underlying themes, and third for the implications. The future is closing in faster than we can perceive.
A fantastic read for young and old. Want to foster creativity in your child make NOVEL IDEAS a must on your gift list.

5.0 out of 5 stars DELIGHTFUL READ FOR YOUNG (OR OLD) ADULTS! May 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had the pleasure of reading M.O.D. by J.C.Allen and when I saw Novel Ideas, I was more than happy to read it. I was not surprised to find an outstanding new addition to the Allen and Hicks teams list of outstanding works of fiction.

Novel Ideas is the story of a young girl's quest to find family in a world run amok. The story takes place in the future, where political pressure in The United States has rendered free speech criminal, and the puruit of original thinking an act of war.

This novel is chilling in it's dystopian vision, but told with warmth and humor for the younger set. A very good lesson is taught here; that love, courage and determination can beat evan the strongest adversary!

An excellent, five star read!
