Now includes a subscription to NSSWM online (the fiction section of writersmarket.com). For 28 years, Novel & Short Story Writer's Market has been the only resource of its kind exclusively for fiction writers. Anyone who is writing novels and/or stories?whether romance or literary, horror or graphic novel?needs this resource to help them prepare their submissions and sell their work. You'll have access to listings for over 1,100 book publishers, magazines, literary agents, writing contests and conferences, each containing current contact information, editorial needs, schedules and guidelines that save writers time and take the guesswork out of the submission process. NSSWM includes more than 100 pages of listings for literary journals alone and another 100 pages of book publishers (easily four times as many markets for fiction writers as Writer's Market offers). It also features over a 100 pages of original content: interviews with working editors and writers, how-tos on the craft of fiction, and articles on the business of getting published.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does Its Job September 24, 2010
Format:Paperback
I just got this book a day ago at full price. Hey, it isn't bad. But I'm a bit disappointed in the included articles and the amount of mistakes made throughout. I would give this book a four, maybe if it wasn't ironic. It talks about the virtues of grammar and doesn't follows its own advice... I guess that all doesn't matter. What's the most important part of this book? The listing of agents and publishers, right? Well, there are are enough of them, with details, and this book does include a free online subcription to access info on their website. Buy it if you need it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much overlap, not enough originality March 8, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The 2011 Novel and Short Story Writer's Market is a useful tool for a writer. It contains notes on how to approach publishers and agents, listings for agents, publishers and magazines, trade journals, conferences, and competitions, to name a few. There are, of course, more. If you are new to the writing world, a book like this is a really useful step in the right direction.

My advice: if you buy this book, you probably don't need to buy the 2011 Writer's Market. The reverse is also true - if you have 2011 Writer's Market, you don't really need this book. This book goes into a little more detail with literary journals, but it does not create enough of its own niche to make it a unique book. There is a LOT of overlap between the two.

I bought both of them in the bundle, and was disappointed to see how much of this book is in the larger Writer's Market. This book's strength is its list of academic journals and literary magazines. If that's what you want, then this is a good choice. Otherwise, you are better off choosing one.

3.0 out of 5 stars 2011 writers market October 11, 2010

A few new listings, but basically you could suffice with the 2009 or 2010 version.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2011 Novel And Short Story Writer's Market February 16, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is what I would call a handbook for the stated fields to find places to get our work published. The information is definitive and does two things: target the agents, editors, and publishers who would be most likely to be interested in our work. And secondly, those who would not be interested thus not wasting our time. The beauty of these listings is the names of the people to contact. A direct contact is also a critical nugget of information.
When I receive the annual edition, I make a list of likely contacts and start work on queries and proposal letters.
