Good, but be careful!,

This review is from: 2007 Novel & Short Story Writer's Market (Paperback)
I purchased the 2006 edition of this book and have used it extensively. I have only sent out a dozen or so queries so far, but have been encouraged that most of the agents and publishers have responded, even if the response is not what I would like to hear yet. A couple of cautions however, first, verify addresses on the web whenever possible. I sent out a couple of packages to publishers who were no longer at the address listed and left no forwarding address. Second, even though this guide is considered beneficial, sometimes scammers get through the system. I had my book accepted by a publisher only to find out that they weren't what they claimed. The pubisher is PublishAmerica and is apparently in the business of making money off of authors and not the public. Fortunately, because there is so much dishonesty everywhere nowadays, I did a Google search about this publisher only to find they had many disgruntled author/clients who were stuck in long contracts they couldn't get out of. I highly suggest that if you recieve an acceptance letter from anyone in this book, you check the agent or publisher out on the web before signing anything. You will save yourself a lot of heartache!

I really think this source book for submitting short stories to literary reviews and other entities is invaluable. It cuts out a lot of lost time by indicating which publishers would accept your pieces. The only fault I have with it is it doesn't include examples of particular submission letters, but all in all I find the information in it right on target.

In my opinion, it is the best resource for short story publishers in the USA. I Can't imagine a writer without it. In addition it has some interesting articles on writers, editors, and publishers. A very good resource for all writers.

This book is just what the doctor ordered for this aspiring beginning writer. Having no idea where to submit, nor the in and outs of submission, this is proving to be an invaluable resource. I am grateful it exists!

This review is from: 2007 Novel & Short Story Writer's Market (Paperback)
I've used this book as a source of the marketplace for my stories since 1999. It's the most concise and useful book of its kind.

This book cuts down on the hassle of plowing through publishers one isn't interested in contacting. I like that it gives me a clear idea of just what each one is looking for.

This book takes people's money and uses up trees. Just use the Internet and you'll get a lot more information, and for free. People in the publishing industry--editors and agents--move around like gophers, popping up here and there on a regular basis. No book is going to be reliable, and a book made up of sloppily acquired information is going to be worse than no book at all, because you'll think it's right. Even the Internet sources can steer a writer to obsolete information, but at least you have numerous sources to draw from.

Good reference for fiction writers,

If you're a fiction writer, you'll find all sorts of useful information in this book. Especially if you're relatively new to the scene and not an experienced insider. The first 150 pages consist of interviews and articles about writing, some of which were not of interest to me. But these pieces covered many topics and included materials for literary writers and genre writers too.
The Resources section at the back of the book included a highly useful glossary of genres, in case you're one of the many confused by the proliferation of sub-categories and markets in this area. Also, on page 544, there was a listing of corporate behemoths and the presses they own. (OK, this info changes frequently, but this will give you a place to start tracing who's really in charge.) The listings of agents, lit magazines, genre markets, mass market magazines, workshops, prizes was comprehensive enough. (Of course, you'll want to go to their individual websites to check for recent staffing changes and detailed submission guidelines.) I was happy to see a section of online magazines too. There are lots of lists and indexes sorted so that you can find information quickly. This book is well organized and easy to use. If you ARE an insider with a long history and lots of literary contacts, you may not find this book as helpful; save your money and go to the websites. But for the rest, I'd recommend this book.

This book is an invaluable reference for writers wishing to be published. Various markets are categorized and described along with their preferences for style, length and other factors that determine what they will publish. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, you can select your most likely target and avoid sending your work out without knowing the criteria of your intended market.
