Save Your Money,
This review is from: 2009 Novel & Short Story Writer's Market (Paperback)
Due to the nature of the publishing industry, it is impossible for a printed annual reference guide to be up to date. Publishers disappear or reinvent themselves constantly.
If you are looking for a good market guide, try online resources like Duotrope instead. However, if you are a newbie to publishing your fiction, you may want to browse this book to get a feel for the how-tos of submitting.

This book is a must have for an emerging writer who is trying to get his work out there. This book eliminates the problem of figuring out where to get started. After your story is complete, search the detailed listings to submit to journals and magazines that would be a good match. I wouldn't have known how to go about becoming a writer if it wasn't for this excellent book.

Handy Resource,

The book contains easy to use listings with keys for important attributes of different markets. It has a good number of listings, although there is at least one well-known fantasy/sci-fi publication that I noticed is not included. It also has good cross-reference indexes, allowing you to easily zero in on a particular market. There is section at the beginning with writing tips that seems out of place and not very helpful. On the whole, it is an excellent resource for anyone unfamiliar with marketing their work. (Note: our use of the book has been limited to the short story markets.)

Great resource for the aspiring writer. However, by publication time, the info as to whether or not publishers are accepting submissions can be out of date. Do yourself a favor and check the publisher website for any updated submission guidelines. Often there is additional information available there that is essential for a successful submission. Or you may miss out on an opportunity, where the book says the publisher isn't accepting submissions, but the website (which is more recent info) indicates submissions are being accepted. I still use this book as a starting point.

As usual, Writer's Market delivers and if you can get your work in even 25% of the publications in this book, you're well on your way to becoming a successful freelancer. There are tons of book publishers, magazines and professional organizations to choose from broken down by category and/or or genre.

Kindle Edition Does Not Contain The Market Listings,

This review is from: 2009 Novel & Short Story Writer's Market Articles (Novel and Short Story Writer's Market) (Kindle Edition)
I know it says there are no marketing listings at the bottom of the description, but I linked to the Kindle edition from the full edition and didn't bother reading the description again. I also didn't notice that the title was changed to read '...articles'. It wasn't what I was looking for.
So, beware Kindle buyers. If you're looking for the listings, don't buy the Kindle edition of the "Novel & short Story Writer's Market" because you are only getting the articles. Of course if you just want the articles, it's a bargain. One more caveat, there is no link (in the Kindle menu) to the Table of Contents, for some reason. It does exist. You just have to page backwards to get to it.

I'm finding this book really helpful, but don't depend solely on it for every answer. Look at the website's you want to submit to, because they really do change things all of the time. But this book is really great for starting off. It has hundreds of addresses and tons of helpful information directly from publishers. I'm glad I bought it.

As a brand new writer I am looking for all the literature I can find that will help me on my way to creating a novel that is interesting and publish-worthy. This was the most helpful book I have read to date. Not only does it have many worthwhile assignments and tips, it also has articles from some of the most famous writers to date. I would recommend this as a 'must have' for all writers!

Gave this as a gift to my son who is in his last semester at University as a journalism major. This is a comprehensive, indispensable resource tool for unpublished writers seeking to get their first story or article published. Highly recommended.
