NetWare 4.2 is a scalable and flexible server operating system. It provides a single point of network administration through the NetWare Administrator (NWAdmin) utility, a simple point-and-click graphical interface for managing your network. Through NWAdmin, you can access Novell Directory Services (NDS), a hierarchical database that stores comprehensive information about network users and resources. With NDS, users log in only once to gain access to all network resources for which they are authorized, regardless of their location in the network. You can deploy applications to workstations and manage workstation profiles from any server or workstation with the ZENworks Starter Pack.

Other features of NetWare 4.2 include flexible resource accounting and licensing management, easy installation and migration, high-performance Web server capabilities, multiprotocol routing, integrated IP support, file and print services, symmetric multiprocessing, and network security and reliability. You can incorporate advanced services such as telephony, multimedia, and Internet and intranet browsing and publishing, with others services now emerging.
