The Third Suite for Windows,
By Acute Observer (N. Jersey Shore) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Novell Standard Perfect Office V3.0 (CD-ROM)
Perfect Office 3.0, by NovellNovell, the famous network product, bought up Word Perfect and Borland (Quattro Pro, Paradox) to provide a competitive product to the software suites of Lotus and Microsoft in Windows 3.1. WordPerfect had been the leader in word processing since the early 1980s. They researched its use in offices and designed the product to fit the needs of the users. It was expensive, but worth the price for its reliability. [The book "Almost Perfect" describes their operations in the 1980s.] The Standard Edition includes Word Perfect, Quattro Pro, Presentations, and Envoy. The later version (Suite 7) contains more features for Windows 3.1 and is more smoothly integrated. This product supports and accesses other file formats. Word Perfect was long famous as the most professional word processor in DOS, but lost its lead with the shift to Windows 3.1. This change in the internal interface doomed most of the small companies that had flourished earlier. To install support for other word processors (such as `MultiMate') choose "Perfect Office Setup", "Install", and then "Options". "Conversions" allows selecting other formats that are not in the default formats. If anyone has old formats they should convert them before their floppies or hard drive develop file errors; I recommend using Rich Text Format. Many older formats are no longer supported. You can install this product in Windows 95 (or 98); but you will be limited to the 8.3 name format. I choose Word Perfect, Quattro Pro and Shared Components for installation. You will find a conflict between the DAD and the Windows taskbar. I dragged the DAD bar onto the top right of the desktop; or remove it from the "Start Up" list. There may be a conflict with the other Perfect Office components and the FAT32 file system. Novell was the big name in Networks in the early 1990s, but somehow was diminished by later events. More than that I cannot say.
