CNA Study Guide,
By A Customer
This review is from: Novell's CNA Study Guide for NetWare 5.1 (Hardcover)
The study guide is enough to pass the test. It contains all the material on the exam that you will need. I strongly recommend using the two CD's to implement a study network and doing the labs. I also read the book, cover-to-cover, twice.. then went back and re-read security and zenworks. The day before the test I used Exam Cram online resources to review. I have no prior Novell experience and was only A+ certified prior to this exam. The study took me one month at about 4 to 5 hours a day. The book DOES contain editorial errors, such as referring to incorrect Figures or tables and a few incorrect statements. Read carefully or you will not pick up on it when it happens.

Good book, but not for a beginner,
By A Customer
This review is from: Novell's CNA Study Guide for NetWare 5.1 (Hardcover)
This is a good book but certainly not if you are a beginner. This is not a criticism of the book. I don't beleive he had the beginner in mind when he wrote the book. It is just a warning to anyone who is totally new to Netware. The book contains some errors. For example, you cannot assign the "create" right to a server object. The book makes this clear in one section yet 20 pages later leads you to believe you can. Also, in NDS security, you cannot filter the "Inhertiable" right. It's not necessary. The book appears to be wrong on this. You have to be on your toes to catch these inconsistencies otherwise it can be confusing. The book is very weak on ZENworks and should take a more basic approach to this topic.

enough to pass, anyway,
By A Customer
This review is from: Novell's CNA Study Guide for NetWare 5.1 (Hardcover)
In my opinion, this book itself is enough to pass the exam. I am not kidding, I passed it by 70 points more than the water level. I did NOT go to training class, NOT buy any testing software, NOT even have 2 computers to connect! Actually I never installed the two CDs shipped with this book. So my suggestion is: Read every page and understand it (or at least trying to). Every thing he wrote is to the point, although not comprehensive( like Zenworks and NDPS is too little) But if you goal is passing it instead of making 800 score, this book is enough. Another book by synbex is also helpful for practice, although that one is not as good as this one. This book lacks questions to practice, this is the most regretful drawback.

The only Book that you need to Pass CNA,
By "rizzywizzy" (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Novell's CNA Study Guide for NetWare 5.1 (Hardcover)
I recently purchased this book, & I am a complete begginer with Novell, I have found this book quiet useful, infact I beleive this is the only book you will need to pass the exams..this book comes with two CD's which include Novell Server operating system & Client, which I think is quiet useful, because without these CD's the book is not worth 60 dollars. The title of the book is a little misleading...it says CNA study guide 5.1 whereas it only covers one (of the two exams) required to pass CNA test..so this book only covers the 5.1 admin exam 50-653 portion, for Networking technologies exam 50-632 you will have to buy a separate book. One mistake at the amazon site is that they say the book is 900 pages whereas it is 611 pages book, but I think its worth buying this book from amazon because if you will buy this book from Novell it will cost you 75 dollars (shipping extra). I gave this book 4 stars because the author has included technical crossword game after each chapter, which is unnecessary & time consuming.

Passed Test first time with only this book,
By "scorpion@mc.net" (Chicago Suburbs) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Novell's CNA Study Guide for NetWare 5.1 (Hardcover)
I think this book was very helpfull. I had no experience at all with Netware and with only this book and the hands on info that it had in it I passed the test the first time, with lest than 1 month of reading and practice. As to one of the other reviews the book does only cover test 050-653, however this is the only test required to be CNA, the other test the reviewer mentions is toward the CNE track, which it does mention in the books appendix. If your new to CNA this book is a must have, well worth the money!!

Awsome Prep Book,

This review is from: Novell's CNA Study Guide for NetWare 5.1 (Hardcover)
All you need to pass the C.N.A. exam 50-653 is the patience to read this book and an understanding of the concepts presented therein. I easily passed the test with a greater than 700 score. I read the book twice and set up my own Novell test network so I could do all the labs, which is probably more than most people need to do.BOOK LAYOUT MINOR GRIPES EXTRA MATERIALS WITH BOOK OVERALL

Lots of filler, but all you need to easily pass the test,
By A Customer
This review is from: Novell's CNA Study Guide for NetWare 5.1 (Hardcover)
I passed the 50-653 Netware 5.1 Admin test yesterday with a score of 714/800. Passing was 568/800. This is the only book I used to study, and I can tell you that all of the exam questions referenced things I had learned/remembered from this book. It took me 3 weeks of hard studying, I read it carefully once then reviewed it a second time.

Big improvement in style over previous CNA guides,
By A Customer
This review is from: Novell's CNA Study Guide for NetWare 5.1 (Hardcover)
I give David a 5 on this book. 1st off, it has what you need to pass the test, and then some. On top of that, the complaints you've seen about superheroes and long story lines and confusion arising when mixing these stories with Netware information really doesn't apply so much to the 5.1 version of this book. I read his 4.1 and 5.0 CNA versions previously, and that's where the reputation for filler was earned. I was very relieved that he kept it to a minimum in this book, earning him a 5-star from me. I got everything I expected from this book, including a 725 mark (584 to pass) for the test. Install the server from the companion cd and run through the excercises. Makes all the difference in the world. Thanks Dave.

Good book! Lots of details!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Novells CNA Study Guide for NetWare 4, with CD-ROM (Novell Press) (Hardcover)
The book is rather long for the CNA test, but very, very good details about commands in Novell. Exercises where O.K. I can't stand crosswords, but if you like crosswords this book is for you. Passed the CNA exam the first time! Good luck if you take the exam!

GOOD, But full of fluff,
By A Customer
This review is from: Novells CNA Study Guide for NetWare 4, with CD-ROM (Novell Press) (Hardcover)
I found this book very easy to understand, and a good study guide overall. On the other hand, I've never read a "technical" book so full of fluff. By fluff I mean countless stupid ZEN quotes, cheezy "quizes" that weren't even related to NetWare, and numerous other silly captions. The writers could have easily condensed the book by 50% by cutting out all the crap.
