Novell's NDS Developer's Guide "Novell's hard-earned experience deploying NDS in thousands of customer sites, supporting millions of daily users, has taught us a lot about how to build applications and services that really get the most out of a directory service. We're glad to share that experience with developers like you through this book. "Building directory-enabled applications and services with NDS means delivering more value, more customer benefit. That's the promise of directories — giving developers more time and technologies with which to innovate, and giving customers more return for their investment. Together, it's an unbeatable combination." — Dr. Eric Schmidt, Chairman and CEO, Novell, Inc. Leverage the Power of Novell Directory Services

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Novell's NDS Developer's Guide is a no-nonsense compendium of the various techniques for programming for Novell Directory Services (NDS)--the company's cornerstone architecture for distributed network resource management. The book is authored by several Novell engineers and addresses both high-level and low-level programming techniques.

It opens with a brief introduction to NDS that lays out the importance of directory services from a developer's perspective. While coders somewhat familiar with the Novell architecture will appreciate this chapter's brevity, it lacks the examples necessary for the totally uninitiated. The remainder of the first part of the book covers high-level access to NDS through ActiveX controls, Delphi, JavaBeans, open database connectivity (ODBC), and Web scripting. These sections illustrate how to exploit NDS from popular rapid application development and work with the Novell ODBC Driver for NDS to query NDS resources using SQL.

In the longer second part of the book, low-level programming topics are covered. The authors explain the NDS Cross-Platform API and the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)--an important industry standard for directory services. Next the book covers Novell's easy-to-use NetBasic scripting language. The Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI) is covered next, followed by a discussion of Active Directory Services. The book wraps up with techniques for extending the NetWare Administrator and Novell's Java-based ConsoleOne utilities.

A companion CD-ROM contains sample code and Novell Developer Kits to get you started. If you need a practical reference to NDS programming, this guide is as complete as any you will find. --Stephen W. Plain

2.0 out of 5 stars Just a fancy reprint of the NDK Documentation, March 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Novell's NDS Developer's Guide (Paperback)
I was excited when I first saw this book, the content that it promised and the fact that it was released by Novell Press made it a safe buy. I was wrong! The book doesnt cover anything new that cant be found in the NDK documentation. It even uses Novells code samples. It references code on the CD that is non-existent, a common occurence now-a-days. The author obviously did not do any research or hands on work with this book. Do not buy this book, read the NDK documentation and you will be ahead of the game in NDS development.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hits its mark., January 28, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Novell's NDS Developer's Guide (Paperback)
This book seems to contain a little something for most programmers. It's not an advanced programmer's guide but appears to be aimed at guiding just about any programmer in getting started with NDS. I hope we see more advanced books written in the future. For what it is and the audience it seems to be targeting I'd say it hit the mark.

2.0 out of 5 stars A mere taste from the banquet, May 31, 2000
This review is from: Novell's NDS Developer's Guide (Paperback)
This book provides a little taste of all things NDS. It has alittle bit of information on NDS programming in C, Java, ActiveX, andsome scripting. This information is enough to get you started tinkering, but it is inadequate for serious development.

This book does provide a good introduction to NDS programming, and is a springboard to bigger and better things. But if you already know the basics of NDS programming, you do not need this book...
