Book Description

• Twenty years
• Six presidential elections
• One consuming love affair

For Lucy Jones, the distinction between love and politics is hazy at best. Both can be all-consuming, and either can lead to a heart-breaking loss or an exhilarating win. Whatever the case, if you’re seen as a loser, you probably are one. Lucy first learns this lesson in 1988, when she’s a shy girl, battling a high school bully and rooting for Dukakis. Through the years Lucy will experience stunning victories and agonizing defeats as she makes the choices that define her. Meanwhile, she also struggles to define her relationship with Monty, who comes in and out of her life like the changes in public opinion. Is Monty simply a one-night stand, a kindred spirit, or the love of her life? And by 2008, can he offer her a change to believe in?

Over the course of twenty years and six presidential elections, Lucy grows and adjusts with the times. Filled with snarky political and pop-culture references, November Surprise is about the journey we take to believe in a candidate, in love, and in ourselves.

November Surprise is a companion piece to Campaign Promises, which is free on Amazon. They can be read in either order. Both have a liberal slant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just in time for the election August 30, 2012

This was fun. With the upcoming election it was interesting seeing this person's life and love unfold over the past twenty years. It was a total throwback thinking of all the old presidents and the B.S. that went along with them. I remember each of their terms and races and to be thrown back into them so vividly through Lucy's eyes was a really fun story. A great idea, great characters, great story, great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare treat of politics and romance August 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Just in time for election season, November Surprise promises you a romantic romp through the last several presidential elections. You'll enjoy the struggle as Lucy tries to hold her own in political posturing and romantic relationships.

You'll laugh and get frustrated as you remember the past six presidential elections complete with Lucy's take on the matter. Her trouble with political foes aligns at times with her dating woes. Sometimes the politics gets in the way, and other times romance gets the vote.

Take some time to have an enjoyable read in this surprising novel that makes politics both fun and romantic. Read it all the way through to an election and a romance that both have endings worth campaigning for.

I highly recommend this book. The story by itself is interesting enough, but the writing carries the day with skillful craft including the most believable dialogue, snarky humor, and real identifiable characters. I know you'll like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! September 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I was delighted to find that Laurel Osterkamp wrote a follow-up novella to "Campaign Promises", where the character of Lucy Jones was first introduced. Lucy really matures in "November Surprise", and as Lucy's perspective grows less myopic, the other characters become more fleshed out for the reader. Monty's not the invincible god that Lucy first believed him to be, and Lucy realizes that she's not a passive participant in her own life. Although the author is obviously liberal, she does a nice job of including differing political views respectfully. I was happy that once again the politics were interwoven in a way that didn't overwhelm the rest of the story. I look forward to reading more from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars November Surprise August 26, 2012
By DaveS
Format:Kindle Edition
"November Surprise" by Laurel Osterkamp is a delightful trip through the life of Lucy from her teens to her late thirties. I found the use of the four year presidential election cycle as mile stones for her life very clever. It was a good tie in to her political activism which is definitely liberal. Since she mixes her passion for politics with her love life and friendships, it is not surprising that inevitable complications arise. Her youthful naiveté about the consistency of her friends and lovers commitment to her and the liberal causes she champions leads to a lot of disillusionment. As she matures she begins to realize that while she and her friends change and can even disagree on political ideals, human friendships and love can hold and even grow stronger. This realization allows her to grow into a more adult relationship with Monty the man she was destined to marry. The many complications the author places in Lucy's life result in a mature women with the chance for a fruitful and fulfilling life. The book is a very good read with some lessons to be learned in this highly charged, polarized political year.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Lucy's sake, vote Democrat October 24, 2012
By MC
Format:Kindle Edition
November Surprise, the latest novel by Ms. Osterkamp, is a provocative look at the last few decades of elections through the eyes of a woman who has always been fascinated by politics. But Lucy's love is not only for politics. Lucy's political tirades and triumphs are coupled with boyfriend woes and whoopees. The woes begin in high school where Lucy squares off against Reggie in a classroom discussion and an afterhour's party, and follow her through the college years into adulthood and marriage, all the way from Dukakis to Obama. When the Democrats do well, so does Lucy, but oh, those long Republican years really play havoc with her heart.

While romance is not generally my forte, I did enjoy Lucy's challenges with Reggie, Drew, Jack, and Monty, and the use of political metaphors was intriguing. Each of her boyfriends presents her with choices that are much more difficult than who she'll vote for in the current election.

A good read with a steady pace, Lucy's story will have you turning pages as you laugh and cry your way through the last two decades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining twist on a love story October 23, 2012
By Laura
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a super fast and worthwhile read -- especially in election season. Whether or note you agree with Lucy's politics, I hope you'll appreciate her passion and desire to believe in people.

I also really liked the character of Monty. Their relationship complications seemed reasonable to me, and ultimately I found him adorable. I also liked the friendship she had with his brother, Jack. The final scene with all three of them together is so sweet, and ultimately shows the power of friendship and family.

Told unconventionally, it had a big impact. I liked the format, I liked the voice and I liked the takeways. All were approachable while making for a thought-evoking and entertaining read.

This book is a bargain buy for all of the entertainment it provides. If I were one of the TV personalities referenced in this book, I would list it under, "BUY, BUY, BUY."

More About the Author

I have written four full-length novels and two novellas, which have been Amazon best-sellers, but I'm only getting started!

I get very attached to my characters. Lucy debuted in Campaign Promises, a free novella that I released to thank all my awesome readers. Then Lucy's story continued with November Surprise and Blue State, both available on Amazon. Most recently there's The Holdout, also featuring Lucy, but the main character is Monty's cousin Robin, and it's about love, justice, and reality TV.

You can find me on Twitter but I don't tweet super often. A better idea is to follow my blog, www.laurelosterkamp.blogspot.com, or Lucy's blog, www.novembersurprises.blogspot.com, where you'll read about Lucy's career, marriage, and politics.

I teach in Minneapolis, MN, where I enjoy my boot collection, spending time with my husband and two chatty children, and finding time to write. My other novels are both award winning - Following My Toes and Starring in the Movie of My Life. Visit me at www.laurelosterkamp.com.
