Whether you've got all 32 teeth or just a batch of random stragglers holding on for dear life, the dentist is generally someone to fear. How then can a soundtrack highlight the story of Steve Martin's hapless Dr. Sangster without assaulting the dental-phobic public with screeching drills and elevator music? Simple: Novocaine puts the dentist in the victim chair and gives Dr. Sangster's patients the boogeyman reins. Hence composer Steve Bartek gets the opportunity to build this wonderfully tense and creepy score. The soundtrack starts with two rock tracks from director David Atkins's bands, the title track from Penny and "Le Monde de Frank Sangster," a dreamy Francophilian pop tune, from Mellow. It then plunges into the throbbing, ominous burbles of man-about-film Danny Elfman, who's on hand to lend the choir-drenched, Scissorhands-ian "Main Titles" and "I Wish..." That's where the strings come in; Bartek's 10 arrangements are glowing, gurgling bits of electro-brightness that revel in conveying the film's hygienic setting without resorting to teeth-grating noise. Skeletal guitar riffs sound like American Dental Association-approved tools on "Little Guys," while tinkling, stormy strings build into a throbbing percussion storm on "The Lightbulb's Out." Whistling and giddy accordion douse "Menilmontant" in joy, while "The Solution" is a haunting yet soothing statement. Perhaps Novocaine should be the soundtrack to your next checkup. --Kristy Martin
