The 'NOW' series was coined as a definition of today's music. In keeping with this theme, this 'Now 36' album is indeed a snapshot of today's popular music.

SEE MY PHOTOS IN CUSTOMER IMAGES

My problem is the reduction in the number of 'today's music' on the recent 'Now' compilations. Until `NOW 32', the 'NOW' compilations included 20 popular tracks - a 100% snapshot of 'today's music'. The new format (beginning with 'NOW 33') includes only 16 popular hits. In my opinion, the producers of the Now albums have messed up a winning formula!

On 'NOW 32' a 21st bonus track was added as 'What's Next ... that was fine!
From 'NOW 33' to `NOW 35', the format dubiously changed from 20 chart toppers to 16, with the last 4 tracks featuring 'upcoming artistes' as 'NOW What's Next' bonus tracks.

The (current) 'NOW 36' album has yet again just 16 chart toppers. Still tinkering with the formula for the 'NOW' album compilation - the 4 'bonus tracks' now comprise - 3 featuring 'upcoming artistes' and 1 as a 'NOW Flashback Bonus' - an Elvis Presley song. I love Elvis, but please 'NOW' editors, no oldies on an album of 'current music'!

Enough of the experimenting 'NOW' editors! Just listen to what we the 'NOW' buyers are saying!

You found the winning formula a long time ago ... on the 'NOW' 1 to 32 albums! It's that simple! Revert to the old format - a compilation of 20 chart toppers defining today's music ... not the music of tomorrow or yesterday!

I buy the 'NOW' compilation series to collect the hits from the current stars like Katy Perry, Usher, Daughtry, Ke$ha and Nelly. I simply want a 'NOW' album with 100% today's chart toppers! - no 'oldies' or 'maybes'!

This time around, Now does a good job of mirroring exactly what's on the radio these days, and it just so happens that the majority of the tracks this time are actual album length instead of radio edits, and there isn't even much of an issue with 'censored' versions since most of these songs don't involve any explicit lyrics.

The continuing problem with the series at this point is the loss of four track slots for 'up and coming' artists--none of which has proved to become popular yet. And on top of that, they are now using only 3 tracks for the emerging artists and songs, and the final track is now a "flashback" track, in this situation, an Elvis track. Really? Is this really the proper use of a collection of current radio hits? It's just too out of place here, and personally, as a collector of all popular music since the beginning of the rock n roll era, I'm never going to find a 'flashback' track that I don't already have on CD. Instead of forcing an Elvis track onto a new millennium compilation, Now would be better of creating a new series called THEN that features all classic cuts from the earlier days of the rock n roll era...of course, that would be kind of pointless since there are already HUNDREDS of compilations that do just that.

4.0 out of 5 stars An improvement... December 30, 2010
By T. Hof
Format:Audio CD
I started collecting the NOW series with #1 back in 1998, and for the most part was very pleased with the quality of the compilations they provided. Oh sure, there was a clunker every now and then, song-wise, but you could just skip past it and move on to the next tune. Then they started the What's Next format around #33, where they supposedly added the songs from groups that were to be the next big thing (haven't seen any of them make it big so far), and I said "OK, I'll give them a shot". Then #34 and #35 came around, where they seem to have forgotten what a "hit" was, and I wasn't interested in purchasing their product anymore (may have been the Bieber effect). When the collected songs only had 3-4 that I had even heard of (and I listen to a lot of current music), then I felt they had lost their way. With #36, I feel that they may be heading back in the right direction. At least 11 of the 16 songs have had considerable airplay, and they even got Sara Bareilles song on before it got big on radio. The bonus tracks still aren't burning up the airwaves, but they aren't bad (but really, MTV plays better artists as background music during Real World episodes; have they thought about promoting those artists?). If they need to continue the bonus tracks to keep the cost of the CD down (by not paying the higher fees for "hits"), I can understand that. But they need to keep an eye on the Billboard charts, to ensure that the next installments consist of songs that people have actually heard and are interested in purchasing, not just because it is a popular artist with a "B" side they stick on the disc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of hits November 10, 2010
Format:Audio CD
As always, this is a great representation of what's on the radio these days. Some first appearances include Neon Trees and Taio Cruz. Interestingly though, the only chart topper on this album is by Katy Perry (as was the case with the previous volume). There are three "what's next" tracks near the end plus a remixed version of an old Elvis tune from the new release "Viva Elvis". Here are the peak positions of the tracks on the Billboard Hot 100 unless indicated otherwise.

Teenage Dream-#1
DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love-#4
Take It Off-#8
If I Had You-#30
Dynamite-#2
Just A Dream-#3
Deuces-#14
Magic-#10
Memories-#62 (this week)
Misery-#14
Animal-#13
Secrets-#21
King Of Anything-#32
The Only Exception-#24/#23 Digital
September-#36
Stuck Like Glue-#20/#2 Country (this week)
Maybe-#34 Pop/#28 Adult Pop (both this week)
