Not near as updated as it should be, but good pop collection nonetheless
on February 4, 2014
I purchase every Now album the moment they become available. I do this because I am a DJ and even though I may own digital copies of Top 40 hits as soon as they release, I like to have physical copy backups. Also, the Now series always offers clean versions of the songs, if not the radio-edit clean versions. For this reason, the Now series is a staple of my music collection.
Now 49 is the February 2014 release of the NOW music US series. While I would love to see the Now series more on the forefront of what is popular and what is soon to be popular, this release is clearly struggling to catch-up with the mainstream Top 40 charts with songs like Britney Spears' 'Work Work', Drake's 'Hold On, We're Going Home' and Miley Cyrus' 'Wrecking Ball' already dating the album on release day. Most of the tracks here were released in 2013 and many have already worked their way off of the current Billboard charts. There are notable exceptions - Pitbull/Ke$ha's 'Timber', OneRepublic's 'Counting Stars', A Great Big World/Christinia Aguilers' 'Say Something', and Lorde's Grammy-winning 'Royals' still sitting in the current Top 10.
Now 49 is another great grab-bag of pop songs, but I really wish the Now series would do a little more forward thinking with their releases. I used to buy these albums to pick up a few tracks I didn't yet have (or was unable to get the clean version), now I'm picking them up as backup hard copies since I already have all the songs. With how fast the pop music industry moves, it would be nice to see Now planning accordingly - maybe releasing a double album every so often in order to keep up, so they don't have catch-up releases like this one.
