OW! Too Much Funk!,
By obi odobi (Washington, D.C.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Now Do U Wanta Dance (Audio CD)
This was Larry's last great album of his classic 1970s period, and it is truly a monster! In fact, I believe it rivals the first GCS album in playing, intensity, and ideas. Most people will highly recommend the first GCS album "Graham Central Station," which is unquestionably a masterpiece of bass-oriented black funk-rock. But as a second purchase, I would certainly recommend this album before ANY of his other 1970s releases - "Release Yourself," "Ain't No Bout A Doubt It," "My Radio Sure Sounds Good to Me," or "Mirror." From the opening track "Happy-2-C-U-Agin" (which reminds one of "We've Been Waiting" from the first GCS LP) through the funk-rock ballad "Lead Me On," the album is one explosion of funk and soul after another. His cover of Al Green's "Love & Happiness" is masterful, and the funk tracks are Graham at his funkiest, freakiest, and bassiest! Some might take issue with the final track, which is kind of heavy on the Christian religious themes which can be found throughout all of Larry's albums. But in an age where most of the 1970s funk masters are showing the ill-effects of their extreme lifestyles (that is, those that are still alive), Graham has showed us that his religious vision (Jehovah's Witness, I believe) has allowed him to stay healthy and functional, and he is still funking at full strength into the new millenium. Hell, If this is what the church means, I will proudly convert myself! This album is a funk bass masterpiece.

EARTHQUAKE!!!!!!!!!!!,
By Mr Andrew C Salt (Manchester, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Now Do U Wanta Dance (Audio CD)
If you are a fan of GCS and have the first three albums I suggest you get your hands on this. The first 5 tracks on the album are excellent and easily good enough to merit the purchase. Happy 2 CU a gin' is similar to We've been waiting, Do U Want to Dance is funk nasty, Love city keeps the flow moving leading to arguably the highlights of the album Love and Happiness(Al green cover) in full GCS trademark style, and the monster track; Earthquake. Earthquake has one of the most memorable riffs I've ever heard (be it on guitar or bass)and was so far ahead of its time you can clearly hear how this track must have influenced artists like the Chilli Peppers. Whilst the last tracks do not have the same impact as the opening 5 they are listenable and do not put you off owning the album (although the back of the CD might as it has some of the cheesiest photos possible!) GO AND GET IT AT ANY COST!

The joint, Lead me on is an understatement no music lover can't refuse. So funkafied..it will have your head swinging to the beat, but lawd...this song is on constant replay. The other songs are good too, but "Lead Me On" won the track throughout the whole album and Gail who replaced Patryce Banks can play additional instruments like the guitar...wow!

I love this record - avoided it for years because of the DISCO cover art! But it actually has some of GCS' best funk, filtered bass, jams and songs. The song Earthquake is jaw-dropping. Literally as heavy as Black Sabbath in places. It's amazing they could go this far on one album. Get it - it sounds great....
I forgot "Have Faith in Me" - it's like gospel, soul, gothic and classical and rock and Russian music - whatever! Amazing tune.

Iam the best Graham Central Sta tion fan. I had evrything that they put out on vinyl, but somehow pr another I lost this album. I magine my surprise when I saw it on Amozon's music site! Now my collection is complete again. From the country stylings of" Stomped, Beat Up and Whooped", to the earth slamming power of "Earthquake", this album delivers GCS at there best! If you dont have this one in your collection, it's not really complete!

During the early days of disco in 1977 BE DAMNED if GCS were'nt going to maintain their spunk and great grooves. This band always had a lot more talent then is often cited. The chord progressions and psychedelic/matrical sound of the closing "Have Faith In Me" shows that they have a little of the (Stevie) Wonder-esqe ability musically.Of course that is just the icing on the cake and I'm not usually inclined towards skipping to the end before starting from the beginning. "Happ-E-2-C-U-A-Ginn" begins this album the way all GSC albums usually do;with an a cappella intro before flying right into two funky monsters;the vocoder whipped title song and "Last Train"."Love And Happiness" has just as strong a funk groove as well but there's something about the arrangment that reminds me a bit of Al Green which makes it all the better."Earthquake" is the song that really brings this out; a hard edged psychedelic funk tune with this very Hendrixian guitar feedback in the middle, concluding with what sounds like an earthquake rumble at the end. This is solid proof that GCS had lost none of it's explosive funky energy and power and that they had no intention of dropping any of their hard funk sound. Continuing in the same tradition of variety there is the Billy Preston like groove of "Crazy Chicken",the 50's R&B/gospel inflected "Stomped Beat-Up And Worshiped" and "Saving My Love For You",a funky pop tune very much out of the Sly Stone school. So don't expect this album to be lite funk or discoish because of it's 1977 release date:this is very much in the hard, punchy funk vein of the GCS's earliest efforts and should be heard right along with them in all it's glory!
