1.0 out of 5 stars Pros: Affordable. Quality. Little/no taste. Cons: Impossible to mix
I've tried several different pure carb powders to customize my protein shakes for either bulking or cutting. I've tried Vitargo, Waxy Maize (by NOW foods, same as this product), and Cytocarb (by Cytosport, the makers of muscle milk).

Back in the 90's, powders not mixing well and tasting like garbage was just the norm. But 20 years later, it's not the norm...

Carb powder is a simple and inexpensive way to make your own weight gain shakes or just taken alone to add extra calories to your diet, manufactured weight gainer is expensive and doesn't last nearly as long as doing it this way. This product was good, just wish they would put it in a solid container cuz the bag is a pain in the a** to deal with, but worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mixes easily, no taste, October 15, 2011

Add 1 scoop (I use a 70cc scoop from an old tub of whey) which is about 38g maltodextrin to 10oz of water and shake. Use a shaker bottle or 1L Nalgene. It will be clumpy / not mix well. Wait about 5 mins and it will look and taste just like water, with a very slight corn aftertaste. Aftertaste is very faint and like you just had a tortilla chip.

No easier or cheaper way to get post-workout carbs. I've read mixing this with dextrose can take further advantage of your post-workout window. Don't forget your protein source.

I have not tried this yet but I've read about mixing this stuff with some whey protein and making your own mass building shake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carbo Gain, July 10, 2010

My 59 year old husband competes in triathlon, 50K runs, P90X, cycling, swimming, etc. He swears by Carbo Gain - saying it definitely helps him. He even has our son & another friend using it for their baseball, softball, futbal, triathlon & other athletic activities. They especially like that the flavor is not overbearing.

The product is as advertised, but the packaging ensures a mess every time you open and close it, unless you are very slow and deliberate. Poofs of fine-grained maltodextrose escape!

1.0 out of 5 stars Pros: Affordable. Quality. Little/no taste. Cons: Impossible to mix, February 13, 2012

But 20 years later, it's not the norm. CarboGain absolutely REFUSES to mix when mixed with any protein, even with a blender ball which I never have to use with decent modern day products.

Absolutely none of the other carb powders I mentioned above will clump so consistently. I'd like to rate the product highly - its affordable, it appears to be quality stuff, and doesn't have any strange tastes to it at all. But it doesn't blend...so you're stuck chewing your protein shake like it's laffy taffy or something. That's ridiculous and not necessary with every other carb product (including Waxy Maize from the same company!) not having this problem.

Other people may have given it higher reviews are using a blender, or simply don't know how much better the other products are is my suspicion. On an absolute scale, it's probably a 3 star product, but since it's the worst product of its kind, it really deserves a 1 star - which it got!

Some carb supplements can be really overpriced. This one is great. It is flavorless and if you add it to your protein with a little more water than you normally would, you can't even tell it's in there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Stuff, April 1, 2011

Make your own shakes with this. Almost tasteless. Add fructose crystals, sugar-free kool aide, a little salt, whey protein powder, etc...all great. Energy from this is perfect, consistent and steady, no spikes or let downs. Use it when exercising for over one hour. Great value vs. the gels. Mixes well if you start with room temp. or warm water, and then add ice. Otherwise can clump up.

This is great for post-lifting re-charge of muscle glycogen. And its a good additive to your water bottle on long cycling trips. I use a lot of it so I'm very happy to have it in this giant, economy size.

I'm a runner and I mix this with regular sugar and an inexpensive whey protein powder in a large container to make something resembling a typical weight-gainer mix, but it's exactly the ratio I want and super cheap. I mix that powder with milk and use it as a post-workout recovery shake. I find that pre-mixing the dry ingredients helps them combine with the milk more easily. When I put this or the whey protein straight into the milk, they clumped pretty badly. They still clump a little, but if I mix it up an hour or two before I drink it, they have time to dissolve well. I gave it 4 stars because it clumps up quite a bit when mixed straight in, but that's my only complaint and I'm able to work around it well enough.
