Advantages: (1)Zinc gluconate is always lower in cadmium than all other forms of zinc supplements. (2)No copper has been added. Like iron, manganese, and aluminum, copper is a pro-oxidant that, in excess, will damage every cell in our bodies and increase our risk of death from heart disease, cancer, and a dozen other killer diseases. (3)The price is affordable. (4)Absorption is adequate. Zinc gluconate is not as well-absorbed as zinc monomethionine, chelated zinc, or zinc picolinate but it is absorbed as well or better than all of the remaining zinc choices.
Disadvantages: (1)If you swallow exactly 1 tablet of zinc gluconate 50mg per day, then you don't need to worry about copper deficiency. However, if you swallow more than 1 tablet per day, then make sure that your diet includes foods that are rich in copper.
THE BIG PICTURE: Like selenium, zinc is a beneficial antioxidant. Calcium (from calcium carbonate tablets) is also a beneficial antioxidant but only while it travels through our digestive tract. Once absorbed into our bloodstream, calcium will, in excess, increase our risk of cardiovascular problems and prostate cancer.
Anyhow, zinc has been shown in scientific studies to be helpful against the common cold, influenza, pneumonia, diarrhea, and other immune system problems. To improve the performance of zinc, eat dried olive leaves (best), drink olive leaf tea, drink Bruce Barlean's olive leaf extract, swallow oleuropein/olive leaf extract capsules, or use extra virgin olive oil. Other helpful tactics: Breathe hot air, swallow Loperamide (anti-diarrheal), swallow vitamin C (to boost blood glutathione levels by 50%), and eat lots of green vegetables. However, swallow your zinc tablets away from all plant foods because the very beneficial antioxidant, phytate, which is in most plants, will block the absorption of about half of the zinc in zinc tablets.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL when taking Zinc for the first time. ONE 50mg CAPSULE can cause severe reaction, and can cause sever gastrointestinal distress, vomiting, and severe nausea. Zinc must be gradually increased even from 10-15mg (1/4 capsule in water) up to a full capsule over a few days or even a week time. After that, it's great mineral anti-oxidant protection and supplement. Take care.

I take 2 of these a day for overall health and they work wonders. My energy levels are up and so is my libido. Men make sure your getting enough zinc as it aides in fertility if your looking for that sort of thing.

Very pleased with product and quality. When I start to feel a cold or flu is taking hold I take 100 - 150mg daily until the symptoms disappear -- the results are typically highly reliable. Otherwise I do not take this supplement. Seriously, it works. Your mileage will vary.

If I had to choose for the one mineral I could take as supplement for the rest of my life it would be zinc. I consider it the most important mineral in the human diet.
I take 100mg a day. I have leukodynia and have had that since childhood (white flecks on the fingernails, considered zinc "starvation"), and am self-diagnosed with HemoPyrrolLactamUria.
I learned about these conditions from Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, researcher Trudy Scott, and various research articles. I have been taking 100mg on almost a daily basis, for more than 5 months now.
Not only do I never get colds, and I got over bronchitis in -one- day, but I have become a total extrovert! All my life I have been a "loner", had severe social anxiety, was indoorsy, with even the thought of talking to most people being torturous to me. For the first 20 years of my life, I did not eat much meat. I had no grass-fed meat whatsoever, and I ate an abundance of sugars, starches, grains, processed foods, additives, and the like. I had a very high-carb very Standard-American-Diet upbringing. So after learning all I did about zinc, it very much appealed to me to try to attain a sufficiency in this mineral, knowing that I hardly got any of it throughout my first 20 years of life.

In addition to the 5 months of this mineral, I have been on a relatively low-carb, high animal meat diet for about a year. I strive for eating according to the Paleo Diet standards, but plenty of times allow myself beans, potatoes, and sometimes rice. I go out of my way to avoid wheat, corn, and soy. Sometimes I consume more sweeteners or more starch at once than the diet recommends. And I have a habit of drinking a lot of decaf coffee with cocoa >_>.

What has zinc done for me?

I started taking this to clear up my skin and I can definitely tell a difference in severity and redness, but I still have mild acne. Worth a try, but be sure to take with a meal because it can make you feel nauseated if you don't.

I've been taking this stuff for 3 weeks now, anywhere from 2 - 4 50mg doses a day. Immediately I noticed when running my gas powered weed eater before mowing that my chest pains from Angina were nearly gone. I used to get severe chest pains while weed eating about half way though my lawn and always had to stop until my heart slowed down. Zinc allows red blood cells to carry more oxygen and that is some of the problem with Angina - pain because of restricted blood or oxygen flow to the heart. For me Angina attacks are caused by anxiety from physical or emotional stress and chest pains radiate down my arm into my joints and up to my teeth and jaw. It's quite scary because I was awakened at night with chest pains if I dreamed about running or stressful activity!!

I also added Benfotiamine, R-ALA, L-Carnitine, & L-Arginine. This combination seems to help and allows me to exercise a little more without fear of the pain. I see why body builders use it as it supplies more oxygen to the muscles during a workout. I actually discovered the benefits of Zinc Gluconate while reading a double blind study about immune system benefits. One person in the study group asked if he was receiving the placebo or the Zinc. He needed to know because his Angina went away and he was able to ski again. The researchers revealed that he was getting the Zinc Gluconate. You didn't have to tell me twice to try it...and now I'm sold! :D

Cheers
